[KC Chiefs.com] The Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has made several additions to head coach Todd Haley’s coaching staff.
The following coaches have been retained by the Chiefs: Bob Bicknell, Joe D’Alessandris, Chan Gailey, Tim Krumrie, Brent Salazar and Cedric Smith. The following assistant coaches are joining the Chiefs staff:
Joel Collier
Gary Gibbs
Steve Hoffman
Bill Muir
Clancy Pendergast
Pat Perles
Dedric Ward
The Chiefs didn’t designate duties for any of these coaches. But Gailey (offense) and Gibbs (defense) are the likely coordinators. From their coaching backgrounds, it’s also possible Krumrie will coach the defensive line, Pendergast the linebackers, Collier the secondary, Ward the wide receivers, Bicknell the tight ends and Hoffman the special teams.
D’Alessandris, Perles and Muir all have experience coaching the offensive line. There is no obvious candidate to coach the running backs.

If Gary Gibbs is our new defensive coordinator I don’t see the D getting any better…….I sure hope I am wrong though.

Personally I think we hired the wrong Gibbs for the wrong spot!
See article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Gibbs
This is who the Chiefs should have hired to run the OL, he was there once, and could have been there again for the right price.

wasn’t n.o. one of the worst (probably only behind detroit) defenses in the league last year?
if this gibbs becomes the chiefs next d.c., i think we’re in trouble….

I thought it was going to be Romeo as DC, still could be yet I guess but probably not. Instead we hire guys who get fired because the defenses they run suck. Maybe, Hopefully there’s enough experience there to turn our defense around. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Gary Gibbs is our DC I don’t get it but I have to believe that Pioli knows what he is doing! that is why we all wanted him right?

New Orleans was ranked 18th this last season on defense.

I’ll take 18th over 30th any day!

New Orleans defense last year was not actually that bad in terms of yards per game allowed, what hurt them is the lack of take aways. Maybe somehow this guy can get a good mix of our takeaways and New Orleans yards allowed then maybe we’d have something. Who gives a s**t if we give up 300 yards a game if we take it away 3 times?
Comment by NCCHIEFSFAN — February 18, 2009 @ 4:08 pm
People remember its the players who have to make a defense work, everyone would be stroking off Pendergast if the Cardinals held the Steelers off those last two minutes, and the Saints were not all that bad last year.Who knows Gibbs and Pendergast might have a decent go at it, if we get a few good free agents and some good draft choices. Give these guys a shot before knocking them down a peg or two, if during the course of this coming up season the defense blows, then feel free to slam them.

Ward as “the wide receivers” coach? Isn’t this the same Dedric Ward, former RUNNING BACK till 2004 in the NFL?? Wouldn’t he make a possible running back coach? Or is this a different Dedric Ward than I’m thinking of?

Wide receiver for seven hears only 34 years old. Many reasons as to why arizonas receivers are so good I’m not just talking about larry fitz and boldin but breaston has developed to viable option to get down the field. Maybe ward can coach franklin and bowe to become to flight receivers. We have plenty of talent on offense we just need a front seven on defense switching to a 3-4 might be exactly what we need.

I don’t see how we are going to make the switch to the 3-4. We don’t have a nose tackle and Dorsey is simply not big enough and I don’t think he can get big enough. Also, what linebackers are we putting on the field?? DJ, Old Donnie and who? We’d have to draft LB with first pick and I’m not against that at all, I like Curry and Cushing, but I think we need too many pieces for the 3-4 to work well. Also, who’s coaching them?? Do we have anyone with 3-4 experience on staff??
Comment by H20 — February 19, 2009 @ 2:56 pm
Im really not convinced we need a LB with our first pick. Pioli knows that there are talanted offensive linemen in this years draft, and we definately could use them. Just look at J.Long last yr in MIA, he was key in their offensive turnaround.
So i think we should take either OL- E.Monroe (VA), A.Smith (Bama) or M.Oher (Miss). which means we could definately trade down from our #3 spot (Crabtree could be tempting to someone). This would give us what we need this yr and hopefully two first rounders next yr.
Then with our 35th overall pick we should look at the pass rushers still left in the mix. Hopefully we could get a chance at LB- B.Cushing (USC) or J.Laranitus (OSU). But i think the best guy to take would be M.Johnson (GA Tech). This would be the guy to use as a hybrid DE/OLB in our new [3-4/4-3] combo Defense. but after the combine this weekend we will have a better idea of what to do with that #3 overall pick.
As far as G.Dorsey is concerned, i could definately see him breaking out next year. He just needs other players to comlement him. I mean just imagine a 3-4 with J.Allen, T.Hali, w/ G.Dorsey in the middle.

Dorsey at NT, I don’t think so!! Ngata is 6-4 and 345lbs., Dorsey is just 6-1 and 297 lbs, big difference there for Dorsey to be a good NT. If Dorsey cut some weight, he and Tamba could play ends but he doesn’t seem to fill the bill at NT.
I agree with you that it’d be great to get Cushing in the 2nd round but that’s very unlikely. I also agree that we could use OL help but we already have our LT with Fat Albert and if we were to draft another OL with the 3rd pick, then we’d be paying him more than Albert who plays the prime OL position. Pioli is (better be) smarter than that!
I think we should draft Curry with our 1st pick and look for OL later. Crabtree could be nice because he will be good in the NFL but that’s not a major area of need.
Comment by H20 — February 19, 2009 @ 5:58 pm
i dont think we draft crabtree or curry cause we cant pay a linebacker that much money that does not get sacks but i do like freeman in round 2 i say draft monroe and move albert
Comment by dirt — February 20, 2009 @ 6:29 pm
i think if curry is still around at the 3 pick we have to take him… he is definately going to be considered the best player in the draft and linebacker is definately a hole in our defense. . if we can address linebacker in free agency than i feel we should take crabtree …. wishful thinkin anyways
Comment by cheater — February 20, 2009 @ 7:11 pm
At least it sounds like Thigpen will be starting next season. I want to draft either Curry or Crabtree. They are the 2 best impact rookies.
I thought that Dorsey would come in an require a constant double team… not the case so far. But either 1 of these guys would be awesome. I don’t know what teams would do to defend against us if they had to scheme against Tony Gonzalez, L.J., D. Bowe, Crabtree, and Mark Bradley and J. Charles in the mix.
With 2 smart play callers in Gailey and Todd Hailey that could be a championship caliber offense. And it would be a lot of fun to watch that Offense.

Anything is better than what we’ve had last year. But let’s all realize something here. This is a very young team other than Gonzalez, Edwards, and LJ(if he’s still in KC in 09). I do believe we are all in for a lot of growing pains this year. But those who believe are the real fans here. Anything is possible though. Look at Miami, 1-15 to Division Champ.

What about Orakpo from Texas? Go to the 3-4, Haynesworth, Dorsey, Arakpo, push Tambahawk back to a stand up pass rusher (IMO a much better option for him anyways) and BOOM we have a hell of a D right there.
