[ESPN.com] The Chiefs today sent an undisclosed draft choice to the Patriots for 33-year-old linebacker Mike Vrabel.
Vrabel was one of the leaders of the Patriots defense, and it will be his job to teach a good work ethic to the Chiefs.
In trading Vrabel, the Patriots cleared $3.35 million in cap room.

better not be anything higher than a fourth or fifth….or it would be a s**tty deal….he turns 34 THIS AUGUST we just signed another donnie edwards!!!!!ANOTHER OLD VET ON THE DECLINE WHO’S GONNA GET HURT!!!

Cool (I guess)! Maybe they should quit riding the Jockstraps of the Pats and quit pissin off their own guys (Waters). How do you piss off a guy who was up for every good guy award and a pro-bowler. They need to tone down their demeanor this is not Us the almighty management against you lowly players.

Ok this is all i got to say ill play gm right here and for some odd reason i hope scott pioli sees this so listen:
Draft : Aaron Curry
Sign: T.J Houshmanzedah
And For Some Real reason go after KURT WARNER!!!!!
Trade larry johnson to the browns for some cash and their draft pick and grab crabtree or and offensive linemen
MAN I NEED TO BE A GM!!!!
Comment by Rob 32 Gomez — February 27, 2009 @ 3:58 pm
no you don’t dude. Kurt Warner can stay in Arizona or go somewhere else. Not in KC. that would be retarded.
Comment by zyker — February 27, 2009 @ 4:51 pm
Rob32, ever heard of fantasy football? You can be GM there! But seriously, I agree with you on Curry and Johnson. And TJ would be nice. Curry looks like a can’t miss type of player. Lets just hope last years can’t miss player starts coming around.
Comment by Jeff in VA — February 27, 2009 @ 5:03 pm
Since we are playing GM. Here is what we need to do:
Draft: LB. Aaron Curey, RB. Jevon Ringer, WR. Juquin Iglesius
Trade: Larry Johnson for free diner at Sizzler
Sign: DE. Julious Peppers, LB. Michael Boley, CB. Chris Gamble
Then our D would be:
DE. Julious Peppers
DT. Glenn Dorsey
DE. Tamba Hali
LB. Derrick Johnson
LB. Mchael Boley
LB. Aaron Curey
LB. Mike Vrbal
CB. Chris Gamble
CB. Brandon Flowers
FS. Jared Page
SS. Benard Pollard
Not too shaby, but you know they will probably trade Tony Gonzalez Brian Waters, and Larry Johnson…. and Mike Vrbal will be our BIG signing in Free Agency. I hope I am not right.
Comment by Husker Dynasty — February 27, 2009 @ 5:06 pm
I agree with zyker.
Comment by JRock in Texas — February 27, 2009 @ 5:07 pm
I don’t want Kurt Warner on the Chiefs team.
Comment by Rocky — February 27, 2009 @ 5:19 pm
Hopefully one of many moves….
Comment by Kyle Smith — February 27, 2009 @ 5:44 pm
We need to stick with Thigpen!
Comment by Stich — February 27, 2009 @ 6:02 pm
Vbrabel will bring solid leadership to our defense. He’s not a great player, but he is solid.
Comment by Jeff in VA — February 27, 2009 @ 6:18 pm
hey Nate, we all know the patriots 3rd string would have kicked the chiefs ass last year, and with pioli coming in everybody knew what it was going to be, the jr. patriots. but hey im all for it, anything to get our fans feeling positive again.
And signing vrabel for a draft pick, meaning the chiefs still have the most cash in the market. granted we will most likely not spend it all this year, it will just depend on who will be up for grabs next year.
Comment by KC111110 — February 27, 2009 @ 7:12 pm
Peppers can’t be signed because he was franchised…signing TJ would be awesome. Drafting Curry is a must I believe. We will draft a QB in the 5th or 6th round to develope him….
Comment by Josh — February 27, 2009 @ 9:23 pm
Its funny how the guy up for all the “good guy awards” is pissed when the team does not kiss his ass. It would be extremely nice if waters was around next year but his days in this league are numbered. He needs to realize things are changing and the coaches are finally taking over like they should have seven years ago. We all want to win and we can’t afford one or two OLD players to stop our forward momentum.
Comment by mark snell — February 27, 2009 @ 11:10 pm
You people are dreamers with your wishlists. Get real, we arent signing TJ, we arent getting Peppers, we arent getting all these players that big names or the best at their position or close to it. Look for the Chiefs to load up on lower end free agents for a competitive offseason and in training camp. The draft is where the new breeds will come in ….. Aaron Curry should be our 1st pick.
Comment by Marques W. — February 27, 2009 @ 11:48 pm
This was a smart move.
It is a guarantee that we have a real football player.
Not a CHANCE we might draft a good player.
Comment by Adam, Wichita — February 28, 2009 @ 8:01 am
Please don’t trade good draft picks for worn out Patriot players. They’ve been on top long enough. Pioli doesn’t owe them anything. Vrabel is 35… there’s no future there… none. It’s a sucker trade. Stop now.
Comment by F — February 28, 2009 @ 8:12 am
This is… weird, but I can see what Pioli is doing.. especially if we do indeed draft Curry because then he can be as good as he can be with Vrabel’s leadership and maybe they are looking at Curry to eventually be THE GUY on defense in a few years.
With going to the 3-4 this only makes more sense, however it is going to hurt us more than help us I think this year. Our personnel currently is not even close to being a fit for this type of defense. Glenn D is NOT a nose tackle for a 3-4 defense. Not sure if he could pull of being an end but he would have A LOT of s**t to learn and it almost makes it seem impossible for him… Also I am anxious and also scared to see what will be come of DJ now with a 3-4. Maybe he could be better, maybe he could be worse its hard to tell. I think if he blitzed more he would be better since he has the speed.
Marques hit it too in saying that we aren’t getting any real big names players from FA. We will get a few, but no one as big as Peppers (who got franchised anyway). I am really hoping we don’t go after Cassel though.. 1 MEDIOCRE season is no reason to give him a multi-year ridiculous contract based off the franchise tag price. Look up the stats on Thigpen and Cassel last year…
Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — February 28, 2009 @ 8:41 am
So let me get this straight. We get rid of Donnie Edwars and get Mike Vrabel??? WTF I dont get this move at all. We trade one vet for another. I would have stuck with Edwards.
Comment by Raiderhater — February 28, 2009 @ 9:00 am
I like Donnie Edwards and all… but he is way more washed up than Vrabel dude. I agree we could have used him for 1 more year though so he could retire a Chief. Hell he will prob retire a Chief anyway I doubt anyone else will pick him up.
Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — February 28, 2009 @ 9:24 am
yeah, who would want a 4500 yard passer who can run an offense when we have thigpen.
Comment by mark f — February 28, 2009 @ 11:46 am
Cassel is now a Chief!
Comment by Glen — February 28, 2009 @ 12:10 pm
ya i just saw this one NFL.com i REALLY REALLY hope we did not give up our first rounder for this, that would not be good for us. we need curry or an out standing OL man
Comment by xfatdannx — February 28, 2009 @ 12:16 pm
I knew cassel was coming to the chiefs !!!!!! really interested in learning the intricacies of both these trades to see what all we had to give up. but hopefully they cut us some kind of a deal since pioli is so close with them still.
Comment by KC111110 — February 28, 2009 @ 12:27 pm
Well we got Cassel. I hope everyone got what they wanted by getting this guy, but I know I sure as hell didn’t. He better indeed be the next Tom Brady or this is all just a New England circus that we have going on right now.
What the hell did we give up for him… thats what I want to know! I bet whatever it is, it is overboard and we are losing out on this.
Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — February 28, 2009 @ 12:55 pm
he should wear number 8
Comment by KC111110 — February 28, 2009 @ 12:59 pm
I think I kinda like this. Now we have two good young quarterbacks. Both have some good NFL experience and are athletic. This will be a good thing. Maybe we got rid of LJ in the process.
Comment by Rocky — February 28, 2009 @ 1:06 pm
I am thrilled to get him. Pioli has already made his presence felt and for the first time in years I’m excited to be a Chiefs fan again.
Comment by mark f — February 28, 2009 @ 1:08 pm
Looks like I was too late. Sorry Chiefs fans, but I guess you’re a Patriot farm club now. Might as well send them Gonzo too. If there’s any more picks or talent that Belichick wants I’m sure you’ll find out soon.
Hey… the Steelers won the Superbowl… by drafting smart. The year before the Giants won… same strategy. Before them the Pats. Guess how they did it. Yep… smart drafting.
Good luck suckers… you been had.
Comment by F — February 28, 2009 @ 1:19 pm
looks like we traded for cassels too.
Comment by LEAFCHIEF — February 28, 2009 @ 1:33 pm
OK… I have to admit… if it’s just the 34th pick for both guys then it isn’t that bad.
Comment by F — February 28, 2009 @ 1:38 pm
a starting qb and veteran leadership for a new 3-4 defense for a 2nd round pick and still have the third pick in the draft…..sweet
Comment by TD47 — February 28, 2009 @ 1:44 pm
I really feel that a lot of disappointment is coming to us Chiefs fans via the QB department.
Don’t be surprised if by mid-season Cassel is riding the pine and all of you who are so happy now are calling him everything in the book.
I hope he does great but I don’t have a good feeling about him. I sure hope I am wrong…..Lord I hope I am wrong.
Comment by Kansas City Krusher — February 28, 2009 @ 2:35 pm
yesssss!!! i also just saw it was the 2nd rounder for both of them, this is good news, if we can sign a DE or that one good NT that is left and draft curry, we might have an Falcons/Dolphins type turn around.
Comment by xfatdannx — February 28, 2009 @ 2:37 pm
p.s. i am only ok with the aquisition of Cassel since it did not cost a 1st rounder, LC, or Tony….ya i still think we need to put LJ to work, f**k what he wants we paid that a$$hole.
Comment by xfatdannx — February 28, 2009 @ 2:40 pm
Nooooooooooooooooooo, well let’s hope that Cassel’s “breakout season” was not a fluke and that he holds up behind and EXTREMELY shaky O-Line.
I’m not a big fan of giving up our 2nd round pick for those two. At least it wasn’t our first round. Hell this might turn out good and if it does I’ll eat my words about Cassel. For now, I’m on the fence.
Comment by Gonzo is my daddy! — February 28, 2009 @ 3:05 pm
cassel and vrabel package cost a 34th overall pick…. just saw it on ghiefs website. thats like practically nothing in trade value….
Comment by hardcorefan — February 28, 2009 @ 3:31 pm
so excited I cant spell, I mean chiefs website
Comment by hardcorefan — February 28, 2009 @ 3:32 pm
I like Cassell. He has started 16 pro games more than Stafford or Sanchez. He got to learn from a great QB. Now we need to protect him. Thigpen will make a good backup. I still hope we draft Curry.
Comment by Jeff in VA — February 28, 2009 @ 3:43 pm
first of all, I dont see cassell as a starting QB. hell, I think Thigpen is a better QB than Cassell. Cassell has all of NE weapons and still could not go all the way. He had a Veteran OL that protected him and made him look good. That is why Trent Green had good numbers. He had a great OL to throw behind. I think this IS a New England shuffle.
Comment by Rick — February 28, 2009 @ 3:46 pm
Cassel is da man best chiefs QB sence Lenny biggest name for chiefs in a long long time thank you god and Mr.Pioli now draft Crabtree and cut LJ
Comment by vince — February 28, 2009 @ 3:47 pm
we’ll see if Pioli and Hunt hold true to what they say, that Thigpen would get to compete for the starting job….. he deserves the chance
Comment by hardcorefan — February 28, 2009 @ 3:49 pm
trade lj now to recover a draft pick or two to help o-line there is lots of value at rb in mid to late rounds of the draft like shonn greene of iowa to be the thumper and they have j charles and k smith already
Comment by TD47 — February 28, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
Rick, saying that Cassel couldn’t go all the way is a little irrelevant I believe. He went 11-5, which would get you into the playoffs most seasons, and they had just as good of a shot making it all the way as anyone else that did end up in the playoffs last year. I’m not saying that picking up Cassel is going to be good or bad at this point because you just never know until you see the outcome, but I’m excited about it, that’s for sure!!
Comment by Kraig — February 28, 2009 @ 6:19 pm
Vince…
You are killing me with that comment. The dude hasn’t even played a down yet for us are you F*&^ING serious with that s**t?!?
I sure hope all your Cassel stroking bandwagoners are right because this is how we will be for better or worse for the next few years.
Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — February 28, 2009 @ 6:51 pm
We got rid of the king(Carl) but now have a Cassel. I love this trade.
Comment by mark f — March 1, 2009 @ 12:19 am
mark f: That’s a good one. I like it. The best I’ve been able to come up with yet is Casselmania.
Vrabel is here partly to play, but he’s mostly here to coach Curry (hopefully) and shame Derrick Johnson.
