[Kansas City.com] Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters asked the organization to release or trade him this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Waters asked for his release two days after a brief meeting with new head coach Todd Haley and after being told by first-time general manager Scott Pioli that he had no interest in meeting with Waters, the source said.
Waters, according to the source, was offended and shocked by what he perceived to be the arrogance of Haley and Pioli. Waters’ meeting with Haley and follow-up phone conversations confirmed in the nine-year vet’s mind that the negative reports about Haley he heard from Arizona Cardinals players while at the Pro Bowl were accurate, according to the source.
The Cardinals players told Waters and tight end Tony Gonzalez that Haley, Arizona’s offensive coordinator, was aloof, condescending and ignored by veterans, the source said. Anquan Boldin, Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald Jr. – Arizona’s offensive stars – were all members of the NFC Pro Bowl team.
Haley could not be reached for comment Thursday night. Haley bickered with Boldin and Warner during the NFC championship game. And when he was an assistant with the Cowboys, Haley had several run-ins with flamboyant receiver Terrell Owens.
The source said when Waters informed Haley of his desire to relocate, Kansas City’s coach scolded Waters and indicated that the Chiefs would not release Waters from his contract. Waters signed a seven-year contract extension with the Chiefs in 2005. Waters, a four-time Pro Bowler, is 32 and would seemingly have decent trade value.
Waters declined public comment on Thursday.

I am disappointed with Waters on this. He shouldn’t have let this out. It should’ve been handled face to face. I wouldn’t trade him. I would make him play or retire. Hopefully, they can get together and straighten this out man to man. I am sure nobody intentionally disrespected the leader of the team. He is well liked by the team. If the players take Waters’ side on this, it could be very bad for the team. This is going to be hard to fix.

Well when I mentioned a scenario about Waters leaving and what could be done about it. Nathan Kent responded with his stat laden blah blah reason why it was silly that waters wasn’t going anywhere. Not the smartest guy to bloviate on the Warpath this time huh. However I didnt know Andre Smith was gonna flake but still sucks he wants out. This situation needs to fixed quick.
Comment by Habanero — February 27, 2009 @ 10:37 am
Irv24, I couldn’t agree with you more! But, let’s first take a look at where this rumour started, Jason Whitlock. I love Jason’s columns just as much as the next guy, but, we also knows he does things to fire people up…and to SELL NEWSPAPERS!!!
Now, if this is true, and Water’s is pissed and wants out, someone had better get to Clark Hunt and sit him down and tell him that not only is he going to lose the main leaders on the field now, but, he won’t have another winner for another 10 years, and after two more like the last two, there won’t be one body in the stands that is actually paying for their seat! Why you ask?
If you don’t know that you shouldn’t be reading this or anything else about sports, because Clark Hunt may “Own The team”, but, who really “OWNS THE TEAM”? We do, the fans, if there aren’t any bodies in that stadium other than the corporate sponsors, the NFL would force Hunt, if he had not already thought of it, to sell the team, and for that mere thought his late father is rolling around in his grave as I type this! Here are a couple more reasons:
First and foremost, the Chiefs will not be able to sign one free agent.
Second, whoever the first round draft pick is, I certainly know what I would do if I were he…I would re-register in school, join the Peace Corp for two years, or something along those lines, but, I would tell the NFL and the KC Chiefs were they could stick there draft, because I wasn’t going to play for them. Players have done it in the past, at least as the first overall pick, example Eli Manning.
I don’t know about most of you, but, I am tired of being compared to Detroit, and the 70′s & 80′s Tampa Bay Buc’s, and being the laughing stock of the NFL, but, the changes started, they better be for the good, or they may lose me as a fan, which is said considering that up until this year I had Direct-TV just so I could see the Chief’s games, and I gave it up because I knew they were going to stink.
How much more pain do we Chiefs fans have to go through, and how much more can we?
Comment by Bulldog — February 27, 2009 @ 10:38 am
I am personally torn about this. I think Waters is great, and it is not a good thing if he is unhappy. However, it is also important for Pioli-Haley to be in control of the organization. Everyone was excited when we got both of these guys, and now they are wanting to bring in their style of team, which is remarkably different from Peterson-Herm/Vermeil.
I lived in Dallas when Parcels came in, and this looks like a page right out of his book. The Cowboys were a joke when Parcels first came in, and in a few years he turned that team around and its culture. That is what we need to do.
I don’t know what Pioli-Haley are doing, but I trust in their judgment. I hope that they can turn this team around and make us perennial winners again.

I personally don’t care if Haley is not a “players coach” like Herm. We tried that and you saw what it got us. Someone is going to have to keep these whiney babies in line and that is what we hired Haley and Pioli to do. Good job Haley and Pioli. Don’t take any crap from the players. They (the players)should shut up and do thier jobs. I got news for the chiefs players, there’s a new sheriff in town and you are now going to have to start working hard (everyone, not just Tony).

Comment by kcchiefs19692003 — February 27, 2009 @ 12:58 pm
This is simply the beginning of the new Chiefs’ Way. It is all about the Chiefs as a team, not the individual player. Knowing the NFL landscape, with the quick turnover of coaches and GMs, Waters could have forseen a scenario like this. If he wants to play the “I want out card”, he should sign 1-year deals every offseason so he has the chance to jump ship. Pioli has absolutely no reason to listen to Waters. Why waste time with a player under contract when he has much more important things to take care of, such as signing free agents and planning for the draft?
Comment by JP — February 27, 2009 @ 1:21 pm
JP there is also a little thing called “Team Chemistry”, and if you piss off the on the field leaders now, what kind of example will that set for the next two or three years.
The Chiefs can go 2-14 next year and send it would be the way the coach and G.M. wanted it, get it? Brian Waters can shut up, and say the Chiefs draft a QB number one, and the Chiefs are playing the Raiders. The new QB is in there for a couple of plays because that is how the new coach wants it and the call is for a pass play. Brian Waters thinks to himself, hey remember back in the off season when those jerks decided not to talk to me…well I will showthem why they should have, and in stead of blocking the way he is supposed to, he pulls for a running play and Tommie Kelly comes in and puts the QB down hard… a career ender, and all because of two dipsh*t’s egos.
BTW, the dipsh*t’s are about to trade with NE for Mike Vrable!

Comment by mike41 — February 27, 2009 @ 2:02 pm
This is another case of classic overpaid athletes. Only in sports can you talk bad publicly about your boss’s and not get fired. Brian Waters is a much better person than what he is acting like. Straighten up and start drinking the Pioli/Haley kool-aid.
Comment by HermHater — February 27, 2009 @ 2:30 pm
I still cant believe the actions of this teams so called “leaders”. If these are our teams “leaders” like you all say they are, then it seems they are only trying to lead the rest of the team somewhere else. It is so amazing how athletes always expect their paychecks, and for the orginization to hold up their end of the contract that they both signed…. That being said none of these guys are going anywhere. Haley/Pioli will be sure of that. They signed a contract saying that they would play, so they will play, tough sh*t.
And for anyone to say that the handling of this was wrong, well guess what, todd haley’s job is not to be friends with these guys (HERM), its to do his best at making this team and franchise better, and that will never happen by letting your best players go simply because “they want out”. Perfect example jared allen last year.

Dammit, this was my secret fear….I was trying to nod and smile with all of the happiness and joy everyone’s feeling about this first time head coach and first time GM super duo…of sorts…
However…
WTF?!?!?! Has anyone spotted either of these two men wearing any sort of Chiefs logo EVER?!?!? I mean, at the Combine would’ve been the best time to sport it, but, I”m sorry, that said a lot to me and it just stuck out as kinda odd…
I’m all about an administration that REPRESENTS and that respects the men that are currently signed as CHIEFS and especially the veterans of this organization that have been there/done that.
Sure I’m on the “change train”, but be careful what ya wish for, ya just might get it…if you wanted a new head coach and gm, you got one…what you may not have pondered was the possibility of them pissing off good players and veterans, not just of the NFL, but veterans of our beloved Chiefs organization–and I’m not sure I’m down with that, sorry…I guess I do like a players coach, and I think that’s what we’re used to in KC, whether you wanna admit it or not…Marty, Dick…not just Herm. We like our boys to be happy, and especially damn happy to be Chiefs, right?!?
Comment by Tammy H — February 27, 2009 @ 4:29 pm
im not sure if any of you feel the same way, but my opinion is that this is fallout from the ways that herm led the team. these guys got used to being friends with the head coach as herm was always known as a players coach. now that these players have to take the employee seat underneath thier boss they are having withdrawls. its like the parent that left the kids with the babysitter for 2 long to come home to a bunch of temper tantrums!

Comment by Jeff in VA — February 27, 2009 @ 4:55 pm
As far as I am concerned, any player, vet or rookie, if you have a problem playing for these guys….LEAVE….Maybe you can go hunt down Carl Peterson and join his new team that will be ran into the ground. I belive that Scott knows what he is doing. And he prolly knew that if a vet wanted to talk to the GM right before free agentcey, he was goin to ask about a damn trade anyway. All players who want to start sh*t with this new team, get on the LJ bus and get out of town!!!!
Comment by zyker — February 27, 2009 @ 4:56 pm
Team chemistry really got us somewhere during the Herm years didn’t it? How much team chemistry does a 2-14 team have? Yeah we suck and are the laughing stock of the league but at least we like each other and like our coach because he lets us do what we want. As far as Waters letting someone come through a kill the quarterback, if he is like that then f&*k him we don’t need someone like that. I don’t think he is like that though.
Comment by Rocky — February 27, 2009 @ 4:57 pm
Bill Belichick. 4 Super Bowls. Players hate him.
Comment by nubs — February 27, 2009 @ 5:02 pm
Herm was a player coach so he treated the Superstars like babies and we all know that V-L-T-C (SMILE) so he treated them like kids. I always teach the younger guys in the Navy that its hard to adjust when you first join because you are being taken out of your comfort zone after being babied by your parents which causes you to grow up quicker and put more responsibilities on your own shoulders. It seems as if thats what Todd Haley is doing and that will eventually help get more out of the players. I know BW is a Pro Bowl players but putting more responsibilities on him and treating him like a football player vice a STAR could be better for the TEAM. If you look at the Haley, he didnt take any crap from any players, including the stars (See Anquoin Boldin). If you take a look at Greg Popovich, he treats Tim Duncan like George Hill and thats why the Spurs are so successful. No favoritism regardless of how good the players are. IN OTHER WORDS…..NO PLAYER IS BIGGER THAN THE TEAM……..
Comment by JRock in Texas — February 27, 2009 @ 5:26 pm
Look, Pioli’s never been a GM before and Haley’s never been a head coach before (or a player for that matter, but we’ll not go there today)…would it not be advantageous for all involved to be respectful of one another INTIALLY?!?!? Just at least intially…
If they indeed hate Bill B in Pats country, then he’s earned it, hell he earned it when he got the job b/c he at least was a head coach before. How is this a good thing– coming off as a jackass to the team…Tell me how!!
We didn’t lose 14 games last year bc Herm was a players coach. We lost them mostly in my opinion b/c Gun was not allowed to use the schemes that he wanted to use; yes, per Herm and poor clock mgmt; yes per Herm, and lack of 2nd half adjustments…yes, per Herm.
Maybe b/c Herm is a players coach was the reason we almost won so damn many of those games last year. Remember the guys working and playing so damn hard….Does Pioli and Haley know that? I just read that Pioli told Waters that he could’ve hired 22 men off the street to win 2 games last year… Why would you tell Brian Waters that?!?! Why?!?! Is that respectful?!?! Tell him that later on down the road if you must…but now?!?!? That’s insulting to say the least, it’s February and the name plate probably isn’t even back yet from the manufacturer and he’s already disrespectful. Tell him 10 things he did right or wrong during the last 16 games, but don’t blow him off or disrespect him….UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT! As of last week at the combine, the last season had not been seen in it’s entirety?!?!? How is that possible??!?! That should’ve been done within the first week of employment…seriously. Who can’t stay up and watch football until 2 or 3 AM every night?!?! OOOHH, that’s rough!!!
He needs to watch the tapes, can’t believe they still haven’t…they played their asses off and lost by the skin of their teeth on quite a few occasions—they hardly got their asses handed to them in all 14 losses. Teams that barely won to us KNEW that they damn near lost. I specifically remember Gruden saying pretty much that and I’m pretty sure there were others. We weren’t the laughing stock of the league.
Hell, this summer, after you’ve watched the last 16 games and you know the players names…sure, fire away jackass! By all means! Tell ‘em what you think they need to hear…but gees, it’s not mini camp or anything yet, this is just February for pete’s sake.
They can still redeem themselves to me if either one of them can publicly wear some sort of Chiefs attire in the next month, anything will suffice…just show me you love this team:-)

Thanks kcchiefs19692003…I hear ya on getting a spark fired under him…I just don’t think that the end of February is the most appropriate time for that commentary…that could probably go down with the most effectiveness this summer on the practice field; spark away at that time, PLEASE!! Then a spark and/or any combustion of sorts would do the guys a load of good; I’m not totally turned off by some ‘tough love’; it’s probably not a bad thing at all:-) I was hoping for some rapport at first, if not rapport then respect would do. Teams have been quite successful with coaches that guys enjoy playing for as well…Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, Lovey Smith…those three gentlemen have all made a trip to the superbowl in the last three years.
You can get more flies with honey…
I hope I’m WAY off the mark by the way, nothing would thrill me more, honestly:-)
Go Chiefs 2009!

Comment by Dave S — February 27, 2009 @ 10:56 pm
Screw Waters trade him for younger talent. Teams that win in this league DO NOT baby their players. This is not the cry like a baby Vermeil years or all my players are my best friend Edwards years. We finally have a coach and GM that might be like Cower and Parcells and they do not put up with crap from their players. “We could find 22 players off the street that could win 2 games in this league.” Waters might be the team spokes person for this team but in this case he does not have the team in his best interest. GOODBYE.
Comment by mark snell — February 27, 2009 @ 11:04 pm
lets for a minute look at this from the new gm, coaching staffs position…….is this the right time for waters to push the point?? i mean that pioli has a mess to clean up from herms tenure. waters knows that a real gm and coach will be busy with the combine, and f.a. this time of year. besides….didnt waters stick up for herm just before he got canned??? waters should just wait until the “busy” season is over and then discuss his problems with management. dont get me wrong, i love waters, but jeez….. there are other ways to look at this, not just waters point of view. besides do we really know what went down, isnt it just rumors at this point??? lets give the new management a chance. after all we put up with 3 seasons of herms b/s. pioli and haley can only at WORST get 2 less wins than herm (odds are we will be ALOT better).
all of the b/s with waters, tony, and lj is getting old. i mean they played their asses off for us……but on the other hand, we paid them very well for that!! if they dont want to fill out their contracts…then let em have what they want, and thats the door. lets give the new management a chance. if they screw it up, then we can run them out of town too. but lets give em a chance.

Hey Dave I’m pretty sure Waters was the captain. And I believe all of this is heat of the moment overstepping bounds. I would expect this from anyone but Waters. If this story is true what does it say to all those Brian Waters has helped in the community, everything is easy till you meet a little adversity, and then its time to dodge the challenge. Not everyone has the option to dodge their challenges. And if this story is true shame on waters for thinking his clout in the community would back him more than the team. Don’t think I ever recall many Water’s jerseys or people tailgating talking about how great of day he will have blocking. Yes he is a very good lineman and it would be very difficult to replace him, but every player is replaceable. What is not replaceable is a man deserving of some accolades and the off season actually off. He deserves to be able to do as he chooses, because he has worked hard enough over the years to deserve a slow decline in his final seasons. It’s not he’s going to become the athlete he was back in the day as a tightend. Let the man prepare when he has to.
I understand the new philosophy and expect it to be successful in the coming years, but miracles don’t happen overnight. They take time and even longer for people to realize them as amazing. Scott and Todd will find it wise to retract anything said to offend Waters in the short term. But honestly I don’t give a f**k about a players feelings in the grander scheme of football. This new philosophy will bring great talent because it surrounds a winning idea, a team. There are no running backs or quarterbacks just players that run, catch, and block and others that lead and throw. On the other side eleven people who tackle. And the overall idea of doing your f**king job without mistakes and if mistakes are made you make up for them on the field. Waters just misses his old friends and this is a non story right now, unless he is just looking for more money and then I would retract any kind thing I have said about him. So

I believe this to be good for the Chiefs. We now have a coach that doesnt create personal relations with the players, and creates favorites regardless of skill or talent. Pioli is sending a message to the Chiefs players that no one is safe on this team. What if every player on the Chiefs team wanted to meet with Pioli, then we would get nothing done. Haley/Pioli both have jobs to do and if they had to meet with every player that requested it they wouldn’t be able to focus on the draft/ rebuilding ect.. Water is a excellent guard, but this is going to be a new team with a new face and no one is safe. I have faith in these to guys so we must give them the benifit of the doubt. Remember we (Chiefs fans) wanted change and thats what we got. Water is no acception to the rule. This is a buisness not a highschool FB team so strap up Chiefs and get to WORK!!! Look at it like this, how devoted is Waters asking to be traded just by here say from the Cardinals players. I would be a little pissed too. Kind of childish if you ask me

So, if Todd Haley wants to make waters feel like a hot bum couch whistling dixie over a half-full moon then so be it. Didn’t the Giants hate their head coach a few years back and whine how tough he was on them? Look what happened to them. I can’t understand why players feel like they don’t have to honor their contract when in this day and age a seven year contract is not that common. I believe in shut up and play. What do you think they could play any worse? The Chiefs have sucked incredibly bad for the last couple of years. They need new blood, new ideas and a new attitude. The players get paid INCREDIBLY WELL, so quit your b**ching and suck it up. I think I have a peice of optimism going into this season. Interesting, very interesting.
Comment by John Scott — February 28, 2009 @ 2:59 pm
Ok one more thought. Think about this for a second, I am a firm beleiver in things happen for a reason. First game of the year chiefs injured Tom cant loose Brady. Who steps in: Matt Cassel, turns out Cassel is a stud. So if he turns out to be a good QB and leads the Chiefs to playoffs (theoretically speaking) then we would have never known how good Matt Cassel was without us hurting Brady. So the team who gave him a chance to shine (by injuring starter) is giving him a chance to be a star. WOW.

I think we might have just hired another carl peterson and marty again.I dont trust hailey or the new general manager he seems like another carl peterson his true colors will surface.I dont like the trade with matt cassel ticket prices will go and parking because of a one year wonder qb,you get what you paid for we shall see.I dont blame them palyers wanting to get out of kansas city.17 year season ticket holder.Kansas city in for a long season again, there no blocking and no teamwork on the team.

Habanero: Waters still isn’t going anywhere. Him wanting out doesn’t mean Pioli and Haley are letting him leave. His only recourse is to retire, which he won’t. Interior linemen don’t fetch much in trade scenarios either, so Brian Waters will still be starting at LG for the Chiefs in 2009.
I don’t think anyone behaved right in this situation, from Pioli on down to Whitlock, but it happened, and the only thing left to do is for Waters and Haley to make amends. Both men will privately apologize and Waters will publicly accept the blame.

I agree with pioli 100 per. LJ,Waters,or any other selfish chief that doesnt want to live up to there contract should not be catered to ! Make these multimillionaires live up to what they signed up for! They have the largest contracts on our team , now perform like it! Pioli is 1oo % right he could have won 2 game with anyone last year. You cant make everyone happy. This is about TEAM not I ! Join in on it or get the F%$# out! These guys ask for big money ,get it ,things get tough , they want out? Man up and DO YOUR JOB!

I think waters and lj are two completely different situations. Last time i checked waters has been an amazing lineman for us for a long time. Even on a line with a bunch of jokes in recent years. LJ is a whiney baby who scarcely produced. I don’t like one bit the fact that pioli and haley are acting holier than thou towards a respected veteran like waters. I was for getting both haley and pioli, but don’t come and s**t on one of the few good things we have. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I can think of a few solid and proven players on our roster, and we’re gonna need to count on them, not piss them off to the point of wanting out. I have an uneasy feeling about this new gm/coach if this is a sign of what’s to come.

Mike, are you saying that Brian Waters hasn’t performed like one of our best/highest payed players? If you’re upset about something that’s fine, but jesus. Telling waters to “perform”? So how exactly has he underperformed? I’m just curious since you’re so passionate about him being offended.

No one said changes weren’t going to be painful. In the case of Waters he needs to deal with the new administration. He has been a very good player on losing teams, so if he is upset he needs to get over it or move on! I said the same thing about Gonzalez. These pro bowl players have done nothing to help the Chiefs get a playoff win, so deal with it if they depart. I personally don’t care who gets hurt from the losing teams of the past! If we get a Super Bowl team and they start b**ching that is different. No one from the recent years can do any complaining. New sheriff’s are in town. Deal with it!

I am in Virginia and I haven’t seen anything about Waters on the news. Is it still getting coverage in KC? I guess the Cassel story covered it up.

Goldzone, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you’re an absolute idiot. New sheriff’s in town? Really? And they flex those muscles by blowing off players? Really laying the law down by refusing to meet with your best players. Makes sense. So you think that a starting offensive lineman can win a game on his own? Using your words, it sounds like waters was trying to “deal with the new administration,” and they wouldn’t “deal with him.”
