I love getting Cassel! I watched the Pats many times last year and he showed me more than Thigpen did. I usually agree with you Nathan but I think you missed the boat on this one. I’ll be waiting for your retraction and apology after next season.

I have to say… I watched Cassel’s highlight tribute on youtube and he does have some impressive plays. He has great pocket presense and seems to know when he needs to move. Obviously I didnt see him get sacked in these highlights so I can’t comment as to how long he holds onto the ball.

I will however be cheering on and rooting for Thigpen if he gets a fair shot at being the starter this year. I would love to see him rally his teammates and come out kicking Cassel’s ass. Competition is what we need and I think Gray and Thigpen will give Cassel plenty of it!

Jeff: Tom Brady–hardly a mobile QB–was sacked 21 times in 2007 behind that same OL. The interior of that line allowed 2.5 sacks in 2007. In 2008 they gave up 18.25. Logan Mankins and Dan Koppen both had career worsts in sacks allowed. Meanwhile, the running game, which relies almost entirely on interior linemen, actually got better. That’s a clear indication that the line was doing its job, but the QB was holding the ball too long. There’s a reason why Brady won 16 games and Cassel only won 11.

He already has more experience and won more games than any other QB on the roster.
It is a no brainer.

Also, the average sacks given up by offensive lines was 32.36. The Chiefs gave up 37 and NE gave up 48. I know Cassel is a pocket passer and Thigpen probably save us at least 10-15 sacks by moving around. But my point is NEs line was not all that great.

I think the fact that he didn’t play in college is mute now. He has faced 16 professional football teams and put up respectable numbers. Lets not forget that we are fantasy GMs and Pioli is a pro with a great record of evaluating talent. I don’t think he would have paid this price for him if he didn’t think he was capable of being the QB of the future for this team. We still have more cap room to fix the Offensive line. And we have a coach who won’t be afraid to bench Cassel for Thigpen if it doesn’t work. Look at Lienhart.

The AFC West is for the most part up for grabs. KC does usually well within the division. They have to find a way to win in Conference and against the NFC… The biggest reason for the drop off last year. NO PASS RUSH!! Remember we got rid of Allen. We didnt pick up an answer for that loss. It really hurt us in 2008. So we need the threat of getting to the QB… Negative yardage plays makes defenses great. Key to 2009 is getting players with pass rushing skills.

I think most people realize Cassel is far from a sure thing. On the other hand, we do have better data on him than most college QBs. While it is a calculated risk, so are all draft picks. Two starters, with one being a young QB with a high ceiling, for the 34th overall pick sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Even if it doesn’t work out, I’ll still think it was the right move. Who is to say the would be 34th pick would work out?

We have to get an offensive line. Waters will probably tear apart any unity we have. And when you face people like the 08 Titans who have badasses on the d-line, they will crush us. Our run game will suck, our pass game will suck and our defense cannot win every single game for us. Time to sign a couple free agents or go young as hell in the backfield.

You are dead wrong about Matt Cassel. There are things that need to happen to help Cassel be a great quarterback, but he will be a definite upgrade over what we have. If we rebuild the offensive line, Cassel will be the franchise quarterback we have been needing for a long time. Even if the offensive line only plays as well as they did the second half of last season, our win/loss record will dramatically improve. Matt Cassel will turn out to be an absolute steal from the Patriots.

hey this is the way I see it, he will win us more than 2 games next year. Thats an improvement in my book.
