[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs announced today that Clancy Pendergast is their new defensive coordinator.

Pendergast, 41, was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals for the past five seasons. He worked with new Chiefs head coach Todd Haley for the past two years. He has also coached for the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns.

The Cardinals played multiple defensive formations last year, at times using the 3-4 and the 4-3.

    1. Uh…. ok soooo are we still going to a 3-4? Was Dallas in a 3-4 when this dude was there? I don’t think they were then…

I really thought we were going to get Crennel, but then again its been awhile since coaching moves were done.

WTF does this mean for our defense?? Whatever it is it better be 300% better than last year FFS!!

    3. How do you know you don’t like him??? That’s just a stupid thing to say.

That’s the main question RednGold- “are we going to a 3-4 defense”

      I hope we do.

    4. Um, I know nothing about this guy……
But looking at the 2008 defensive regular season stats, here’s the comparison between AZ and KC.
KC allowed 440 pts ( NFL rank 29th)
AZ allowed 426 pts ( NFL rank 28th).

Same amount of interceptions, same amount of defensive touchdowns.
AZ won games (9-7) because they scored 427 pts (net of 1) compared to KC’s 291 (net of -149).
I hope Haley knows something about this guy that stat books don’t tell us.

    6. give the guy a shot…. gunther was a helluva defensive coordinator but he even said that hs defense last year sucked balls cuz the head coach (Herm the Germ) controlled the play calling… so maybe this guy can be given some room to roam… who knows? plus his defense did dominate the entire playoffs… yes i know, they lost the super bowl, but the steelers hadn’t done jack up until that time. give him a shot….

    7. I don’t think it’s as clear as “are we going to be 3-4 or 4-3?” I’d guess we are going to use both in 2009. Many teams use both, sometimes because they are in transition from one to another (e.g. Miami last year) or they just plain use both for different situations (I believe Pendergast did that with Arizona last year).

    8. if the guy can get the defense to keep a lead for a win at the end of the game, i’m all for it.

    12. Coaches coach, players play. Only so much a coach can coach. We have to put accountability on the players as well.

    13. Chief Tom, mind your own business, can’t keep your mouth shut huh??? goodness… Look at the numbers, Pendergast is not a great coordinator… maybe next time I’ll spell it out for you

    14. Its just the way of the chiefs fan to expect to get screwed before you even get screwed. Its happened so many times before

But why not give the guy a chance, how much worse then gunther could he be? I mean this guy was only a min & 30 sec from being a superbowl champ, when was gunther cunningham ever that caliber of D coordinator? You have to at least admit this is an upgrade from last year.

    15. Reguardless if you like him or not lets get one thing straight.

The Arizona Cardinals went to the SUPERBOWL. Did the chiefs??
Im not saying they had a particularly dominant defence or anything. Just saying that their star players were mostly on the offensive side of the ball. Without looking name me the linebacking core of the cardinals.

So like it or not but our new defensive coordinator was coaching the superbowl last year. Is that not a good thing?

Mind my own business???? That’s a really stupid thing to say on a public site, besides, on your first post you didn’t even say why you didn’t like him. I bet you didn’t even know anything about him until you read Johnny 5′s post.

p.s. It’s “DieHardChiefs Fan” not “ChiefsDieHard Fan”. Maybe you’re crossed eyed???…..

    17. A couple of other things that really must be looked at here, is:

      1) The players in the system

      2) As many teams were giving up toward the end of the season, these two Coaches helped to have their team motivated above and beyond, and it worked. The defense gave up significantly less yardage, and less points than they did the rest of the season. What does this mean, as much as I was a fan and wish that Marty Schottenheimer, at least these guys got over the hump and helped get their team to the Superbowl, which is at least 99% of the goal for each and every year, am I correct here or what?

      3) The injuries from last year set the Chiefs back, and if Herm was sticking his two cents in all the time, as the head coach he has that right, then that hurt as well.

If someone were to post this same article at the end of the season, and the Chiefs go 6-10, will anyone even care? From 2-14 to 6-10 is a dramatic jump, will I be happy at 6-10, probably not until I look back and realize what a dramatic difference in wins that is…do the math, that is winning 3 times as many games which is an incredible feat, in any league!

Let’s give these Coaches the benefit of the doubt with the Chiefs players until proven wrong…

    18. Missouri Cardinals or Kansas City Patriots…indeed, that’s a good point! Who were the Cardinals without Fitzy and Warner though, seriously:-) My God, the Cardinals sucked for years!! AAHHH!! I’d rather model the damn Pats.

    19. You guy’s crack me up! You say “Fire Herm, Fire Gun, Fire Carl Petersucker” I agreed! But take one thing into consideration. Until we win a reguler season game, “WE STILL SUCK On DEFENCE” And who in thier right mind would say that they would want to take over a D that SUCKS!!!
Remember economic crisis? Would you risk your career that you have right now for what D the chiefs have when you already have a system that works better somewhere else?
We asked for change, Well! WE GOTS IT!!!!!!!!!

    26. Nothing wrong with the buddy system. Every new coach and GM does it. Look at the two teams we are getting these people from. Perennial winner Patriots and recent superbowl team cardinals. I don’t see a problem with it at all. Comparing Chiefs defense and Cardinals defense is hard. They had a high scoring offense like we use to.

    27. Bulldog hit the nail on the head with his first paragraph. This guy helped AZ’s D improve dramatically to make sure they could compete in the playoffs, and not only did they compete, they did enough to keep winning.

Give me these guys over Gun and Herm any f*(#ing day! Maybe we would go to a hybrid 3-4/4-3 defense.. it would probably be the best transition because damn near all of our roster is not cut out for the 3-4… YET :D

    28. I sit here and read these ” armchair coaches/general managers” talk about how crappy last years record was. I totally agree last year sucked! However it sickens me to see the doubt cast upon Pioli, Haley, Pendergast. They have proven track records, and you self righteous so called know it all need to just close your pie hole and wait for this next season to be over before issuing your ” I told you so.” I have faith in the wisdom and the track record of those chosen to guide our Chiefs to the promise land. Go Chiefs!

    29. To BadBones: Any DC would love this job. There’s 0 risk of a defensive collapse, nowhere to go but up and you get to take credit regardless of how much was you and how much was new players.

      Comment by Jesse-James — March 14, 2009 @ 8:34 pm

    30. Last I checked Arizona DID go to the Superbowl. Not only that, but several of the defensive free agents that are sought after happen to be Cardinals. Their defense suffered early in the season, but I thought they looked very strong at the end of the season.

It is a fair comparison to look at the numbers, but what do we really have to lose by giving the guy a chance? We can’t be worse on defense, especially if we get Curry. I think we will be pleasantly surprised how good our team will be by midseason.

    31. hell yeah just to get to coach the chiefs yeah i would change my job in a heart beat

      Comment by michael diedrich — March 15, 2009 @ 8:59 am

    32. Its all about the system. Nothing more nothing less. It shouldn’t matter what one particular guy did on one team to the next.
I mean you have to ask will Pendergast have more control over the defense in KC? How much control did he have in Arizona? That will make a huge difference. We saw that last year. The offense was totally revamped to fit what Thigpen was able to do. From a running to team to a spread.

So in Arizona did Pendergast have all the players HE liked on defense?? Did he design a system for what he had? They pretty much have a clean slate with all the young guys in KC now.

Ill use one player Randy Moss. With the Raiders Randy had some of his worst years statistically. Then he went to the Pats and began to have Randy moss like numbers. In his 2 years with the Raiders 1558 yards and 11 TDs. In 2 years at New England 2501 Yards and 34 TDS. Was he a different football player as a Raider or did the system in New England fit him better?

So last year did arizona have all the defensve players Pendergast wanted? Or did he tailor his defense to what his players could do. That would explain why the numbers were lower in the begining of the year and then got wayy better in the playoff run.

      You sir, are an idiot.

      Comment by Chief Tom — March 15, 2009 @ 8:29 pm

    34. Bulldog, I’m not trying to start some kind of fight… but you mentioned that near the end of the season that the 2 AZ coaches (coordinaters) had their players ready to go above and beyond.
      Here’s what they did.
Week 12- lost 37-29 to the Giants
Week 13- lost 48-20 to the Eagles
Week 14- won 34-10 against the Rams
Week 15- lost 35-14 to the Vikings
Week 16- lost 47-7 to the Patriots
Week 17- won 34-21 against the Seahawks

Now, granted that once they got into the playoffs they beat the Falcons, the Panthers, and the Eagles.

But they seemed to be sort of a trainwreck at the end of the season. If they hadn’t been in the NFC West where the other 3 teams had a collective record of 13-35 they very well might have not even made the playoffs in the first place.
They finished the season 9-7 with 6 of those wins against the Rams, Seahawks, and 49ers. The other 3 wins were against the Dolphins, Bills, and Cowboys. They got light up by the Jets 56-35.
      hmmmmmm…….

      Comment by Johnny 5 — March 15, 2009 @ 10:55 pm

    35. Johnny 5 has a point however, I would like to add this. In many of the games in which the Cardinals gave up a substantial amount of points, the offense was ineffective. I remember watching the Eagles game. Not only was the offense completely uneffective, they gave up a number of turnovers with at least one going for a score. In my opinion, the offense was as much to blame in those games as the defense. It is difficult to stop offenses when your own team goes 3 and out consistantly, as we all know all too well.

Points can be made either way, but until we see the product on the field, none of us have any idea what to expect. The arguement is really invalid, not to mention the personal attacks. It is understandable to disagree with the decision, but anything beyond that is pointless.

      Comment by Travis — March 15, 2009 @ 11:27 pm

    36. I think this guy should have a shot, if they suck, s**t-can his a$$….

“The Cardinals defense was opportunistic under Pendergast’s direction in 2008, leading the league by recovering 17 opponents’ fumbles. The club also tied for fifth in the league a year ago with 30 total takeaways. In 2007, Arizona ranked ninth in the NFL in run defense by allowing 97.9 yards per game.”

      Comment by kk — March 16, 2009 @ 12:24 am

    37. Johnny, so they lost some games at the end of the season-so what. They still made it to the superbowl. I don’t understand your arguement. They won enough games to get to the playoffs, then won all the playoff games except the last one. Which was a damn good game by the way. They played very well against the best D in the NFL.
AZ went from like 5-13 to 8-8 to 9-7 the last 3 years. That’s pretty good improvement. The Chiefs only won 2 games and they were in the worst division in football (even worst than NFC West). Lets give the new coaches and players a season to prove themselves. If they are worst than Herm, then we can complain.

      Comment by Jeff in VA — March 16, 2009 @ 6:01 am

    38. Agreed, I want to give the new coaching staff a season to gets things working the way they want it… players/scheme’s/etc…

I was just pointing out the AZ’s defense was comparable to KC’s last year. Which isn’t that bad of a deal…. if the Chief’s offense could have put up numbers closer to what AZ we would have finished 8-8 or better.
I’ll try better to see it as the glass being half full! ;-)

I guess that suffering under the Herm regime for a few years turned alot of us into ‘skeptics’ 8-)

    39. I agree.

    40. So now Jay Cutler is asking to be traded from the Broncos to most likely the Det Lions for the #1 pick . . . . All this because the deal for Matt Cassel, lol, how funny is it that in one move we managed to bring in a possible probowl QB, and remove one from our division at the same time, on the other hand, how dangerous would the bronco’s now be with a rookie coach, no starting QB, trouble on Defense, but they’ll have the #1 pick [curry] to play with.

Then you have the raiders who have been solid in the recent drafts and have potential. But we all know that as long as AL “the evil emperor” Davis is in charge they will continue to be terrible.

And lets not forget the chargers, who will be getting a healthy merriman, LT/sproles, not too mention Rivers has really been coming around. This will be our competition for the AFC West, which we can win if we play our cards right.

The KC Chiefs are showing more promise then all of these teams with, maybe the exception of the chargers, so i am very surprised to still see people upset on here. Now isnt the time to be upset and cynical over changes being made, thats what the end of the year used to be for.
