[Kansas City.com] Running back Larry Johnson’s future in Kansas City could be determined by the outcome of his grievance hearing with the Chiefs on Wednesday.

At issue is $3.75 million of guaranteed money Johnson is due from the Chiefs in the contract extension he signed in August 2007. Generally, NFL salaries are not guaranteed, but Johnson’s contract calls for payments of $3.5 million this year and $250,000 in 2010 that the Chiefs must pay regardless of whether he plays for them.

The Chiefs claim the one-game suspension he received from the NFL last year for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy is a breach of his contract and frees them from having to pay the guaranteed money.

One source familiar with the situation said that should the Chiefs win the grievance, they would probably release Johnson, suggesting the team wouldn’t be going through the trouble if they didn’t intend to free him from his contract.

Updated: 4/2/09
The case between the Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson was heard Wednesday by a special master, but he made no ruling. Neither side was certain when a ruling would be given.

    1. TRADE HIS ARSE!

    2. You can’t trade someone who isn’t worth anywhere near the salary his contract gives him. Release him and move on.

    3. Release him??? No! get a draft pick or 2 for him.

    4. Maybe a 4th or 5th is all we can get for LJ. Even a 4th is a tad bit too high.

    5. Right, a draft pick or 2? Good luck with that. If it works out then we can just start picking up guys getting released from prison and try and trade ‘em for draft picks. They probably have more morals and whine less than l.gay.

    8. I read that if KC wins the grievance hearing (which is Wednesday) that the team would release him.

It kinda sucks that we wouldnt try to trade him and get something but if we are just outright releasing him then Piolo and Haley know something we don’t.. maybe it would be too much work to try and talk this dude up to trade him and they just want to be done with it. It does sucks that we won’t get any compensation, though if someone picked up TO they will pick up LJ.

After all, LJ just spits on women instead of cries like a baby on the sideline.. how can’t you want this super classy guy! /sarcasm

    12. Trade Waters for a draft pick 3rd round, Trade Johnson for a 2nd to Cleveland, then Trade Gonzo (As much as I hate it) to the Patriots for a second. Hence we would have gotten Cassel and Vrabel for Gonzo.

Before you all go ballistic over the Larry Johnson for a second. He may be a problem for Kansas City. Maybe a new scene would be best for him. Jamal Lewis is on is end, and Johnson would be a perfect fit for them. Clevelnad picking 5th could pick up a unproven NFL RB, that was proven in college. Problem is that RB needs time to adjust before he goes into a NFL game. No picking 36th they can go for a tightend, but still leaves the position open for a RB. If they can get a former #1 pick for a second here they should.

I can understand your worries concerning this. Bringing in another foe of the Chiefs, look at Denver. They can put any back in and tear it up. It starts with a good offensive line that opens up holes.

Jamaal Charles is just plain sick-he reminds of a Sproales. He rushed for 4100 yards and 50 TDS in his last two seasons. He showed promise, and that means alot. He was a 73rd overall and best of all …SPEED. If he breaks it open watchout. I believe when you put him in, and do not forget K. Smith, J.Battle, and D Savage is there also, he can make things happen.

Add some weight to him (199) and get him to 220 then we can have some major power there also with speed

    14. Looking at the draft, I wouldn’t mine (if they’re not already gone)to pick up Shonn Greene or Donald Brown with our second or third pick if possible. By the way, Curry is visiting the chiefs for a workout.

    16. Chiefs Draft Needs
Urgent: A strong run-blocking right offensive tackle to pair opposite Branden Albert is urgently needed. A franchise pass-rushing right defensive end to replace the departed Jared Allen is desperately needed. If the Chiefs do not think Tyler Thigpen is their quarterback of the future, then they need to draft a franchise signal caller.

Strong: A wide receiver to play opposite Dwayne Bowe, a tight end to groom behind Tony Gonzalez, an offensive guard to groom behind Brian Waters, and a corner to pair opposite Brandon Flowers are strongly needed.

Moderate: A starting defensive tackle to pair with Glenn Dorsey, a starting center, and a reserve linebacker are needed also.

Nice to Have: Wide receivers, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and defensive backs are also needed.

    17. Out of that the Chiefs took care of the Quarterback no Tyler added Cassell.

added a Linebacker with Vrabel, and added a tackle with Goff.

Now add Curry and our urgent needs are done.

    19. I don’t think LJ’s salary is that big of a deal based on the the total amount of money it is, especially with the increase in cap. $3.75 mil over 2 years is middle of the road money for a starting RB. Not close to the big contracts, so it would be easier to swallow or take on by another team. I do think a trade would be more beneficial to the team, but at this point, I think the Chiefs just want him gone. Not to mention his production is less than average; and heart is less than that. Cannot believe he still has believers.

I think his release would be more of a statement than
anything else. “If you want to be a punk, we don’t want you”. He has basically cried since he came in, for one reason or another. Just speculation, but that is how I see it. You never hear situations like his in New England.

As for Waters, I think the addition of Goff his interest to remain will be considerably higher.

Isn’t Kolby Smith still on the roster? I think he can fill the role opposite Charles. Drafting a back in the 6th or 7th round wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

I do hope they retain Thigpen. At the very least, he deserves a roster spot for his contribution last year. With offseason work in the system, I think he will be a quality backup, and possible future starter.

    20. Kcchiefs19692003,

I thought Brandon Carr did a good job last year when he paired with Flowers. The real problem was lack of pass rush and the safeties wasnt in the right position. You can only hold coverages for so long before it breaks down. If you notice, nothing is being said about the performance of Carr and Flowers. We are signing WRs, LBs and O-Lineman. Carr started every game last year for the us last year. The only reason we signed Travis Daniels is because we released Patrick Surtain. He will be competing for a roster spot. Maurice Leggett did a superb job at the Nickle position late in the season when he got a chance to play. With that being said, I just dont think a corner is a strong need. Thats just my opinion.

Good valid points, I believe you can never get enough corners if one goes down. Now with that said, The person that was there on Brandon Carr (he was second string remember this) side was …….Patrick Surtain (Starter) They have no one to play backup if Carr gets hurt.Playing left and then shifting to playing right has its disadvantages. I found out that when you get a player thats been playing say “Right Tackle”, and move them to “Left Tackle” he has some problems and or issues transitioning, because he is on the right instead of his left. The same would be for any positions.Sure there are some gifted players out there that can handle this transitions. As for corners, he would be looking over his left shoulder when he is used to his right. Go to a playing field and try it. I believe you will see what I am refering to. With the Corners we have now would you depend on Dimitri, or Leggett to play on the other side right now? I would not till I saw there experiance increase. Keep them where they are comfortale before mixing things up. Hence it states get a corner as “strong”. I hope this clearifies it up some.

    24. I want to also state I forgot Dimitri Patterson is Eagleas of January 07, Sorry, so we have three corners that I can think off.

    25. Kcchiefs19692003,
I thought Maurice Leggett did a great job last year too. If Maurice Leggett didnt get hurt, then Patrick Surtain probably wouldnt have played the last three games of the season. Patrick Surtain started the first game of the season before he got hurt. When he was healthy enought to play, he played nickle back because Carr was playing so well. Once we get a pass rush, all three players (Carr, Flowers, and Leggett) will be even better. In other words, corners are good, but a pass rush make the two times better. These are only my opinions.

    30. So tomorrow is the day that LJ’s future with the chiefs will most likely be decided. But there is something about this situation that makes me wonder how pioli/haley will handle it. This will be the true test to the new regime in KC because in the NFL most Head Coaches/GM’s will preach about a better attitude, and work ethic but will bend the rules for raw talent.

LJ two years ago could have made his case to have the rules bent for him, but with his lack of production and eagerness to leave KC i think he isnt going to be sought after by other teams. This will in turn mean he will probably stay in KC and take a huge pay cut.

      Comment by KC111110 — March 31, 2009 @ 2:38 pm

    31. Now if that scenario doesnt play out then we could possibly trade him for a late round pick, and dont be surprised if its somewhere in the 4th round or later. And remember how R.Moss got traded to NE for a 4th rounder on draft day? That sounds like a very good backup otption, but pioli could work his magic and get something better in return. We will just have to wait and see.

And the Draft is now only 25 days away, but remember that the lions have gone on the record saying that they will do everything they can to have their pick made and signed at least week before the draft similar to the Dolphins who held the #1 pick overall last year.

Chiefs trade Larry Johnson, Matt Cassel
Posted: News | Steve Wyche |

NFL.Com reports that the Kansas City Chiefs make deal to trade Larry Johnson and Matt Cassel to the Denver Bronco’s for Jay Cutler and a second round draft pick. Negotiations have been in the works for the last couple of days according to an inside source, that shall remain nameless, due to not being authorized to comment. “Jay will bring experiance to our offense” was the comment by Head Coach Todd Haley.

    34. I read a report yesterday saying that the Lions worked out Stafford privately and he did very well. Another report said that they had begun negotiations with the supposed pick, but didn’t identify who it was. It is looking better for us all the time. I know it is premature to imagine the team to come, but I am excited to see what Curry could do for us.

    35. KEEP L.J. He is a better running back that whatever else we will get to replace him. He is an elite talent with a lot of fuel left in the tank. Yeah he is a pain in the ass. Look at what Randy Moss is doing for New England now though. Everyone thought that his best days were over when he was a Raider. You can’t just release elite talent. We will all cringe when he starts tearing it up for another team.

    36. This just in: Cutler and a fifth to the Bears for their first (#18), third, Kyle Orton, and next’s years first.
This was the guy the Broncos were willing to give straight up for Cassell, and we got him and Vrabel for just a high second.

Pioli has already proven to me that he is better than Carl ever was. He not only got a possible franchise QB for pretty cheap, but also managed to get arguably the best QB out of the AFC West at the same time. Things are looking brighter than they have in a long time.

I just never thought that he was THAT good.

      Comment by Johnny 5 — April 2, 2009 @ 5:18 pm

    39. Johnny 5,
I agree, and when I said “best QB out of the AFC West” I meant best QB in the division (i.e. Russell, Rivers, and our QBs). I personally think Rivers is better and that Cassell will be too, but Culter is the only one to go to the Pro Bowl.
I am estatic to see the Broncos crumble before us. Now their QB options are Simms and Orton.

      Comment by chiefsfan88 — April 2, 2009 @ 7:08 pm

    40. That’s true the Broncos are a worse team now after losing Cutler. He is a crybaby b**ch, but he was pretty good. Also Orten may prove to be ok with the talent the Broncos have. He has bettered himself.

      Comment by Dave S — April 2, 2009 @ 7:29 pm

    41. Chief Brad
I do not understand the loyalty you and some other fans show towards LJ. Regardless of how much “fuel” he has left in the tank, he doesn’t have the fire to make it run. I have never considered him an elite talent, especially not now. Your comparison to Moss is not applicable due to the circumstances involved in a receiver being successful. Who was throwing to Moss in Oakland? No one will cringe when he blows up another locker room, even if he does run for 1000 yards. I seriously doubt he ever breaks 1300 again. He has never shown a willingness to be a team player and I will bet that will get his ticket punched. I would much rather have a 6th rounder who played his ass off, than a 1st rounder who constantly cries and underperforms.

Comment by Gonzo is my daddy! — April 2, 2009 @ 8:10 pm

    43. When LJ gets the ball, LJ takes care of business. Do you remember the Denver game this past year. He has to have the carries. He is at his best when he is running downhill to the outside, but over and over the Edwards regime would force him straight down the middle, usually getting blocked by is own lead blocker, who was usually already stood up in the backfield. Give him the ball, but be creative in how it’s done. Go over some Vermeil tape.

      Comment by Adam, Wichita — April 2, 2009 @ 8:25 pm

    44. Go over Vermeil tape…..4 years ago?? With Roaf and Shields? He isn’t even the same runner now. He was at his best when he gave a s**t. He hasn’t hit the hole hard since, I can’t remember when. Watch nearly every other team and how their backs run. LJ “should” be able to get 2 to 3 yards a carry by simply hitting the line with some steam, instead of dancing looking for the huge hole or the big play. LJ is a power back, not a juke and move guy. I do not agree with the way he has been used, but you have to take advantage of the opportunities you get, and he hasn’t. Blame it on whomever or whatever, his lack of drive and effort is the true problem.

    45. New Chiefs News!!!

Matt Cassel to wear number 7. Good number for a QB

      Comment by Chief Tom — April 2, 2009 @ 8:56 pm

    46. lj has not been the same since he got the big contract. he has run “timid” since then (stepping out of bounds to not take a hit instead of running over linebackers and corners like he used to). he does not run “mad” anymore. as for the comment about his performance in the denver game last year, remember it was against denver, one of the worst run defenses in the nfl. lj has the type of personality that he needs to be the “main man”. what i mean is all through college and early in the pro’s he was second fiddle to another back. he had something to “prove”. remember the diaper comment? he really perked up after that. as for the comparison to randy moss, it took a move to another team to relight his fire. I think it will take a move to another team to relight lj’s fire. i also agree that i would rather have a running back with the “desire” to play hard rather one that just shows up to collect his paycheck. i think that’s what pioli is good at is finding players with that desire.

      just an observation.

      Comment by DENNIS — April 3, 2009 @ 11:13 am

    47. Maybe if we sign P.Burress he could tell LJ how to run more like B.Jacobs. That is how LJ could run if he ever gets a chance again, just look at how S.Alexander fell from glory, LJ needs to realize that this league has plenty of other RB’s who want their chance to prove themselves, because S.Alexander had a way better attitude than LJ and accomplished more and now is struggling to remain a third stringer in Washington.

But if ya ask me Haley/Pioli would rather build this offense through the passing game, and maybe pick up a RB late in this years draft. We should seriously consider using some of the money we win back from this case w/ LJ to sign a big name WR, there’s a lot of them still out there. Here are a few to consider : M.Harrison(IND), T.Holt(StL), M.Floyd(SD), R.Williams(JAC),K.Robinson(SEA). These guys probably wont make it much past draft day. Also D.Brooks might help add to our LB corp, but if we intend on drafting A.Curry he wont be needed as much.

Draft Day only 22 Days away !!!!

    48. 7 is not a lucky number in KC. Story on KCChiefs.com.

LJ stated he wants out of KC. Haley stated he only wants players who want to be here. That means he is gone. I don’t think teams will be rushing to take him. He will probably be a backup where ever he goes and he will complain again.

      Comment by Jeff in VA — April 3, 2009 @ 7:29 pm

    49. Holt would be a great pickup if we could do it for a fair number. What worries me is that there doesn’t seem to be a tremendous amount of interest; either they are wanting too much money or there is a concern regarding elongated performance that is scaring teams away. I don’t recall him ever considered injury prone, however. Harrison has received even less attention than Holt, and will probably be relegated to a 3rd down possession receiver like when he came into the league. They may have to wait until after the season starts and injuries hit before they get a contract they are interested in. I am surprised they are both available.

Derrick Brooks would be a good pickup for leadership, but not much else. I would consider him a similar player to Donnie Edwards, with more experience on successful defenses.

The thing that excites me about Curry the most is his explosiveness; combination of power and speed. A small reminder of the guy that lead our defense 15 years ago. Not comparing, mind you, just hopeful he has that type of energy and effect on that side of the ball.

      Comment by Travis — April 3, 2009 @ 9:27 pm

    50. I hate to tell you this Travis but Curry in no way shape or form resembles NO. 58. Derrick was a pass rusher, that is what he loved to do. Aaron Curry is nothing more than a great athlete. (Look up that Bolt guy from the Olympics). I know the draft boards have blown up Curry like crazy but we have no use for him.
Curry would be useless in a 3-4 as an OLB unless we wanted to groom him for 3 years, sorry but you don’t groom a 1st rounder for 3 years. I would love to see us throw a major curveball on draft day and get Denver’s 2 first picks in exchange for our 3rd overall. Pioli is a negotiator, we have more to profit from this Cutler trade.

      Comment by NCCHIEFSFAN — April 3, 2009 @ 10:21 pm

    51. A.Curry never really showed that great of pass rushing abilities in college, but thats not saying he cant do it. I just think comparing him to D.Thomas isnt easy, but if we take him at #3 he will always be in that shadow. And M.Cassel could wear a jersey without a number for all i care, #7 has a real good ring to it and i think those jersey’s are going to be selling like hot cakes. As a matter of fact i think going to go here and buy one now, lol

      Comment by KC111110 — April 3, 2009 @ 10:22 pm

    52. Apparently you guys watched a different analysis of the combine than I did. Curry was the only defensive player to really have an impressive showing. My point was that he could make that type of impression on the defense. Like I said earlier, I’m NOT comparing the two. He simply would give us the option to run a number of defenses effectively. Having the opportunity to take the best defensive player in the draft in two consecutive years is substantial and to not take advantage of that would be unfortunate. DT was great, but in combination with Neil Smith, they were nearly unstoppable.

    53. NCCHIEFSFAN–”I know the draft boards have blown up Curry like crazy but we have no use for him”.

Don’t be a moron. Look at what our defense was like last year. Join reality. Curry is the real deal.

      Comment by Rocky — April 4, 2009 @ 4:10 pm

    54. Every draft analyst out there says Curry is the real deal. They can’t all be wrong. Haley hasn’t commited to 3-4. He wants to see what he’ll have to work with. Curry wasn’t asked to be a pass rusher in college. He may or may not be able to do it. Most analyst seem to think he can because he is such a great athlete. I don’t think we would go wrong taking him. I wouldn’t mind trading with Denver if we got both their number 1′s or one this year and one next year.

      Comment by Jeff in VA — April 5, 2009 @ 3:05 pm

    55. L.Johnson has reportedly lost the grievance hearing that took place last week, and have made the chiefs decision easy. If the chiefs cut him they wont have to pay 3.5 million dollars, so why would they hold the hearing if they didnt want this money back?

So all signs point to us releasing him, similar to the T.Owens case. Ya, you could try to get a trade for him, but with who? Not too many teams are going to want to put up with his crap. I say just cut ties with him and hope the raiders dont pick him up.
