[Kansas City.com] The Chiefs added another part to their defense Saturday when they agreed to contract terms with veteran linebacker Zach Thomas.
Thomas turns 36 in September, but he has made seven trips to the Pro Bowl in his 13 NFL seasons. His most recent Pro Bowl season came in 2006 with Miami, but Thomas started 14 games last year in his first season with Dallas.
Thomas is the second veteran linebacker acquired by the Chiefs in recent weeks. He follows Mike Vrabel, who came in the trade with New England that also brought quarterback Matt Cassel.
With the Chiefs looking to play the 3-4 defense next season, Thomas is a probable starter at one inside linebacker position. Vrabel will start at one of the outside positions.
Derrick Johnson also figures as one of the starters, probably on the inside. The Chiefs also have Demorrio Williams and recently signed veteran Monty Beisel for depth and to play on special teams.

wow…where does that leave us in the drafting of arron curry?getting interesting fellow chiefs fans

Thats why New England was always good, Pioli added key veterans, yet still had the mind to draft very well. It’s called plug and play, even if Vrabel and Thomas are only around for a year or two, by the time both players are ready to leave, Pioli will have two other good draft picks or veterans ready to take there place.

Now you’re talking! This is the way it’s done Chiefs fans. For the past three seasons, decisions like these were not being made, but now with the right people in charge we’re well on our way. The change to the 3-4 defense was long overdue and we will have veterans on board that know how to win. Youth is important on an NFL team, but it is the mix of youth and veterans that make things click.

I think this puts us in perfect position to draft curry, two master, Vrable-Thomas, and 2 students, Johnson-Curry…Sounds like the LB corp is not an issue if we get Curry. With Williams and Biesel(sp?) we have some depth, plus some other not as known players waiting in the wings.
Comment by xfatdannx — April 12, 2009 @ 2:44 am
Who? J/K. I think he will be great veteran leadership both on the field and in the locker room. Lets get it going Zach and show them that you still have some left in the tank……..
Comment by JRock in Texas — April 12, 2009 @ 5:41 am
Doesnt matter how many good LB’s you have if you cant create a pass rush. I believe we have one of the best secondaries in the league just waiting to explode, but until we can put pressure on the QB this will not matter. I think that we will trade down a few spot and draft a DE. I like Curry just as much as everyone else, but getting rid of Allen was a mistake and we in turn set a seson record for lowest sacks in a season. This will need to be upgraded and Pioli will start in the trenches were it all happens! The only way we draft Curry is if they feel that he can play LB and pass rush as well as a DE in the NFL. His value at #3 is great but the need for a DE is higher! Im getting excited about this year and to see how the draft plays out.
Comment by Raiderhater — April 12, 2009 @ 9:00 am
Now that Zach is on board maybe he can talk DE Jason Taylor into comming to the chiefs. I still think he has a couple of good years left in him. Adding Taylor and Curry to the defense could make it very scary for opposing offenses.

Get ready to see Eugene Monroe in a chiefs uniform. Hello to the new baddest O-Line in the league!

Even though Curry hasn’t had alot of experience with rushing the passer, his speed and size suggest that he could be GREAT at doing this.

Hey guys, check out the latest mock draft on scout.com, they have us trading #3 pick with denver for both the #12 & #18 ,what do you think about that?
Comment by VEGAS CHIEF — April 12, 2009 @ 12:47 pm
I wouldn’t doubt it. I think the chiefs want Connor Barwin with that 12th or 18th pick.
Comment by Rocky — April 12, 2009 @ 5:25 pm
5 words friends…”trade down for Everette Brown.”
He is by far the best pass rusher in the draft, never missed a game, graduated with his degree, and is a perfect tweener for a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB.
Pass rush and not to mention the extra draft picks we’ll acquire.
All of that being said…I’d still be happy if they stayed put and drafted Curry.
Comment by Meo04d — April 12, 2009 @ 8:49 pm
the chiefs could definately trade the #3 pick down, but probably for denver’s 1st and 2nd from this years draft, that way we could still get a quality talent at the 18th pick, and regain a 2nd round pick, which we lost to New England.
What puzzles me is why we didnt pick up D.Brooks instead. i think he would have made a better addition to our team. But i do think Z.Thomas will be an upgrade to a defense that really struggled last season. This really damages the possibility of us drafting A.Curry. But Chiefs fans shouldnt be too upset the LB position has the best overall potential in this years draft

ok chief fans…like the Thomas deal, but the real question is, why the hell is Croyle still on the roster?? He is supposed to make half million this next year. That money could be used better to buy more napkins at the consession stands!!
Comment by dennis — April 12, 2009 @ 10:36 pm
The reason we passed on D. Brooks is b/c he would have cost way too much money. These guys are smart so I’m in on whatever decisions they make. I’m happy with the chiefs right now.
Comment by Josh — April 12, 2009 @ 11:40 pm
I have to admit that this makes me wonder if they are going to take a pass on Aaron Curry, the only supposed can’t miss player at linebacker? If this is the case, then, in the third round if he is still available I say we go after Ohio States James Laurinaitis!

If we do pass on A.Curry there are still a ton of talented LB’s in this years draft. Here are a few to start thinking of wearing the red & gold next year instead of Mr.Curry who comes in at 6’2″/255 lb. . . .
R.Ayers(Tenn)6’3″/274 lb. B.Cushing(USC) 6’3″/244 lb. C.Mathews(USC) 6’3″/240 lb. R.Maualuga(USC) 6’2″/249 lb. M.Freeman(OSU) 6′/239 lb. J.Lauranaitis(OSU) 6’2″/244 lb. A.Appleby(VA) 6’4″/243 lb.

By moving (partially at least) to the 3-4, we are taking some pass rushing pressure off of our anemic DL. Vrabel has been a productive pass rusher in the past, but I don’t think he should be relied on. It may come down to turning DJ into a fierce pass rusher.
Here’s my latest guess as the draft:
- Draft Curry (LBs: DJ, Thomas, Curry, Vrabel)
- Trade Gonzalez for 2nd round pick, draft DL
Now, I don’t want to trade Gonzalez, but I could still see it happening if we can get a 2nd rounder.
Comment by VLTC — April 13, 2009 @ 10:35 am
James Laurinaitis is as stiff as a mummy and his name sounds like a disease or an inflammation. I wasn’t impressed with his combine work. To stiff. Maybe the stiffness results from laurinaitis of the joints.

ESPN Rumor Central says that Tony G could be headed to Atlanta. Its just a rumor. It better be for a first rounder if he is going!

CHIEFS FANS……TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS what do you think about our d line if we move to a 3-4? who’d play nose? tank or dorsey?would dorsey be better at end and have tank at nose? is tamba hali big enough to be a 3-4 DE? could turk mcbride be a good 3-4 DE since he played some DT in colleGE? …if we’re set on a 3-4 for sure i say we draft curry or maybe clay mathews or brian cushing…Curry is an animal but i think we could trade down get some extra picks and then draft mathews later in the round
Comment by mike41 — April 13, 2009 @ 12:44 pm
I think VLTC called it right we still need to draft A.Curry if nobody offers to trade up, then we could put D.Johnson back at OLB where he was before Herm switched him to MLB due to injuries and then M.Vrabel at the other OLB. Then have A.Curry and Z.Thomas as the MLB’s. Add that to our up and coming secondary, then all we will need is a few good D-Linemen to fill in.
Our D-line for next year should go like this . . .
RE:
T.Hali
R.Edwards
LE:
A.Boone
T.McBride
DT:
G.Dorsey
D.Tyler
We will need a lot of depth on the D-Line next year if we plan to play a 3-4. If anyone see’s a good DE that might fall to the 4th-5th rounds of the draft this year you might just find our next starter
Comment by KC111110 — April 13, 2009 @ 1:47 pm
I don’t think we should worry about what D-Linemen “fit” into the 3-4 and which ones don’t. By all accounts last year, none of the guys we currently have did so well in the 4-3 (once without Jared Allen), so how much could it hurt?
I think Ron Edwards is the closest to the NT ‘prototype’ size, but again i don’t think you should put players into boxes before they can prove themselves. Think of all the players that never would have played if simply hired by their height/weight (e.g. Emmit Smith, Drew Brees, etc). After all, Dan Saleamua was only 6’0″ 305 lbs and he was an effective NT in the 3-4.

Here is something that came to a shock to me……..
Kansas City cuts young receiver
April 13, 2009 5:25 PM
Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson
The first four paragraphs of a press release sent out by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday was no surprise. But the fifth and final paragraph was unexpected.
After the team formally announced the signing of linebacker Zach Thomas, who agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million deal on Saturday, the team announced it waived receiver Will Franklin.
The Missouri product was a fourth-round pick last year and he was highly regarded by the former Kansas City regime despite a quiet rookie season He played in 13 games last season and made one start. He had seven catches for 83 yards. Franklin was the 105th player taken in the 2008 draft and was the highest draft pick from the class to be cut thus far.
Clearly, the new Kansas City regime was not enamored with Franklin despite the team’s need for young receivers. It wouldn’t be a shock if Franklin is claimed by another team.

Kansas City
Report: The Falcons want Tony Gonzalez.
My take: A lot of teams probably want Gonzalez. It is very believable to think Atlanta would like to trade for Gonzalez. The key here is whether the Chiefs are willing to part with him. Kansas City owner Clark Hunt has already said the team does not want to trade Gonzalez. The offers may come in but if the Chiefs refuse to play ball, there won’t be a trade.
Comment by JRock in Texas — April 14, 2009 @ 3:49 am
Micheal Lombardi is reporting that Tony Gonzalez has cleaned out his locker and is expecting a trade soon.Lombardi says the trade to the falcons is 85 percent. The chiefs would receive Atlanta’s second round pick.
Comment by David in VA — April 14, 2009 @ 6:17 am
Tony G for a second round pick is an insult.
Comment by Rocky — April 14, 2009 @ 7:54 am
Ya it might be, but not if we’re talking about the 2010 draft. Because remember when B.Favre got traded last year, the draft picks that the jets sent to the packers were not solidified. Which meant if Brett put up the right numbers in that contract year the picks could escalate from like the 4th to the 2nd round.
Maybe we could get something like that from someone, since the risk on taking Tony G is that he’s too old and will get injured before he has the chance to produce for another team.
SO ATL . . . Im thinking a 2nd and a 4th if he does good, or a 3rd and a 6th if he doesn’t, either way we should definately try to get two draft picks and try to hold on to him for as long as we possibly can.
Comment by KC111110 — April 14, 2009 @ 10:09 am
if we deal tony g then where does that leave our passing game??? we’ll have d bowe and thats it….bobby engram will help but he’s not a higher caliber reciever ….now we wont have tony g threatening the middle of the field instead we’ll have cottom who is a blocking TE …and bowe on the outside with an alright reciever in bobby engram….i dont like the thought of trading him…not unless we got a reciever who can threaten opposite of d bowe…which is why i thought the chiefs should have signed torry holt
Comment by mike41 — April 14, 2009 @ 1:57 pm
Tony! What are you thinking? We got Matt Cassel AND got rid of Jay Cutler with one move! The division is crazified! Taking Cutler out of our division SOOOO brightens things up! Tony!!! WTF?!?!?! Don’t do it Clark, stick with what you said earlier—he’s staying right here. He’ll be totally stoked that he did. PS Are they still believing in Brodie’s arm or what?
Comment by Tammy H — April 14, 2009 @ 2:21 pm
Tony is going to miss out on a superbowl if he leaves here. Atlanta isn’t going to win anything. He has a better chance here. But I am like coach Haley, I want players who want to be here. TG obviously doesn’t want to be here. He will go in the HOF as a Chief no matter what. He has earned the status to ask to go somewhere else. TE isn’t as important in the new coaches scheme. We can pick up some good players with TGs salary. All that said, I hope he stays.
Tammy H.– Brodie who?
Comment by Jeff in VA — April 14, 2009 @ 5:22 pm
That’s the word from our friends over at Arrowhead Pride, who picked up a report that the Kansas City Chiefs rejected the Falcons’ second round pick for Tony Gonzalez.
Your first reaction might be something to the effect of “Scott Pioli is completely insane,” but if this particular rumor is true, I think it says more about the way Pioli is attempting to mold his new team’s identity. Teams that have no choice of contending trade away legendary veterans. Whether or not you believe the Chiefs are in a position to compete for the division title, you have to admire a team for not being willing to throw in the towel before the season even starts. It certainly worked out pretty well for us last year.
If the team can’t get Gonzalez for a second, though, I think it’s time to break off discussions. Y’all know I would rather we spent the second round pick on a young defensive player anyways, and if it’s going to take more than that to get Gonzalez, I don’t think it’s a smart move for the future. With the strength of our schedule this year, I’m not going to be the guy who takes a winning season for granted, and it seems in our best interest to shore up the defense. You know, like now.
In my mind, building through the draft is almost always preferable to trading picks or throwing gobs of money at free agents. The best approach combines pieces of each, but when a team has as many holes as the Falcons, you’re better off trying to plug them with six fingers than two. Or whatever analogy makes more sense than the one I’m trying to come up with.
Please leave your (civil) thoughts. At least we’ve got something breaking to talk about, right?
Comment by JRock in Texas — April 14, 2009 @ 6:48 pm
You know what, I love Tony Gonzalez as much as the next guy, and I will say right now that if we can get a second round pick for him we should take it…
Hear me out. Tony keeps saying, not unlike Farve did, that this may be his last year, or he may play two or three more, but, if we get a solid second round pick, we can get a guaranteed four year contract at the minimum (Rookie contract) and possibly longer…
Just some food for thought from and educated, loyal and displaced Chiefs fan…
