Thigpen Wants a Chance to Start

[Kansas City.com] Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen says he’s “not OK” with being demoted to backup after the team acquired Matt Cassel from New England, but he said he’s willing to trust coaches’ judgment and hopes he’ll get a chance at the starting job.

Cassel worked with the Chiefs’ first-team offense during Kansas City’s three-day minicamp, which ended Sunday. Thigpen worked with the second team.

“It’s life,” Thigpen said Sunday. “Everything happens for a reason. You may not see the reason right now, but I know there’s a reason that they brought a guy in like Matt.”

“I’m behind him, and all I’m doing is pushing him, making him better. Hopefully me doing that is going to make this team better.”

    1. They didn’t bring in Cassell to sit behind Thigpen. Especially for that kind of Jack! Although, Thigpen should try to be as patient as possible, because if Cassell struggles, the Chiefs may choose to let him go, instead of shelling out big time! I don’t believe that will happen, but you never know! The person that needs to be packing up his bags is Croyle! My eight year old son could of told the Chiefs, (and did), that Brodie Croyle was way to frail to succeed in the NFL. How it is possible that Edwards didn’t see that is one big mystery! Thank God he’s no longer here!

    2. No doubt. I believe herm wouldve found a way to screww the draft up. which by the way, im not going to be able to see. the best i get is MAYBE being able to keep up with the picks on my blackberry. u got stuck pulling guard duty on saturday. since its a 24 hr shift, im more than likely going to miss sunday too. its awesome. i love the army. but yeah, three cheers for herm being gone. now if we can only get waters to stay, it would be a shame to see him in another uniform.

    4. I like T.T. At least the guy’s not saying WaaaaaaaaaaH WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH trade me trade me. He wants to compete with Cassell to push him that much farther. Way to be a team player Thiggy!

    5. Has anybody seen the new Detroit Lions logo and uniforms???? I never really thought of it but what if the chiefs got some new threads??? Maybe just some minor adjustments, who knows it might help.

And as far as thigpen is concerned, we will need him if cassel gets hurt or if he doesnt do well, so he might just need to be patient and stay happy coming in as a backup and not a third string guy like he was last year at this time.

    6. I say give him a shot? Whats the worse that can happen. If Thigpen succeed as the starter then maybe we can trade Cassel to Denver for their 12 and 18 pick…..Ha Ha. Like that would ever happen.

    7. About the uniforms. Have you been noticing all of the color gray that’s going on. Haley wears alot of it. I think they are maybe going to try to incorporate that into the chiefs uniforms somehow. Not that I would really like that but it’s just a observation/thought.

    8. I like Tyler, but Cassell will be starting the season, and we all know it. As exciting as tyler was last year, it didn’t really lead to a lot of wins. I think Tyler is a great backup, and we could use him in some situational spots to throw off the opposing D. And if Cassell goes down, we won’t have to go to Brodie.

    9. I like Thigpen’s confidence. I hope he stays motivated and keeps pushing Cassel. I don’t believe he will be the starter, but this coach will yank Cassel for Thigpen if he thinks it’s necessary. Look at what happened in Arizona.

    10. I like Thiggy, but Cassel will be starting… I have high hopes for Cassel… and Thiggy may get traded draft night…

BTW, have you guys heard about Julius Peppers coming to K.C?? I read in a couple of blogs that if KC trades the #3 to Denver for the 12th and 18th picks that KC would use the 18th to trade for Peppers and may use Tony as leverage in return for a 3rd rd pick….

Also read that LJ, Waters, and or Tony can be traded to the Cardinals for Boldin and Dansby and a pick…

      Have you guys heard anything???

    11. I havent heard anything about Peppers coming here. Ive read that Peppers was going to remain a Panther. As for Bolden Ive read that hes leaning towards Philly or Dallas. I highly doubt they make a deal trading LJ, Gonzo and Waters for Boldin and Dansby.

I really like Thigpen but it just seems because of the price of him we would have to automatically start Cassel reguardless of “tryouts”. I wouldnt be surprised to see Thigpen traded for another pick during the draft.

I to will miss this draft cause im in the military, this year is because im deployed. But I believe this new and improved Chiefs organization will do great this draft.

    12. rocky and kc111110……chiefs changing or editing uniforms isnt gonna happen and SHOULDNT HAPPEN…the chiefs are one of the most traditional teams there are…..how much have our uniforms changed since we came to kc???? hardly at all and they shouldnt change…the chiefs look sharp out there in the red and gold….i will be pissed if pioli tries to change our uniforms but i dont think he will cuz i dont think clark would allow it cuz his dad was all about tradition

    13. Chief Fogg & OhioChiefsFan , I can not believe that no one on this board even acknowledged your responses!

First and foremost, THANK YOU FOR SERVING! Our country owes you a debt of gratitude, most of which goes VASTLY UNNOTICED, thankfully. I am a Navy veteran, and I have two other veterans coming in (To Chicago) for the NFL Draft weekend, normally there are four of us, but, my Raider fan (Best friend, I feel sorry for him), will not be able to make it this year! We try and get together every year for the NFL Draft, it is our “Guys weekend”, and none of our wives seem to mind… Our eventual goal is to plan a NFL Draft weekend in New York to go to the actual draft.

I am sure we would get on the air, because we would have four guys, all close friends, sitting together in different jerseys, one Steeler fan, one Viking fan, one Raider fan, and of course me with the Tony Gonzalez jersey!

    14. Us losing all those games last year was CERTAINLY not Thiggy’s fault. If he wasn’t throwing into the end zone he was diving into one. Let’s be honest, he kept our offense in the game all game long…it’s the D that collapsed for us, I’m sorry, we all know it’s true. To Gunther’s defense (no pun intended!) he said he was running the schemes that Herm wanted….but let’s not associate not winning last season with TT at all!!

And yes, thank you to those of you who serve our country and also love our Chiefs!

    15. Yep, last year was Thigpen rookie season playing wise. If Im not mistaken he gave Tony another 1000yd 90+ catch season. He made a terrible offence who couldn’t score 10pts a game to one averaging 25pts a game. He had the best stats of any rookie qb that played last year, and better than a lot of top prospects in years past. No, lets not give that guy a chance. Let bring in a one hit wonder that played behind one of the greatest offenses of all time and played average. This will be like Trent Green’s career post Willie Roaf. Either you trade Thigpen for no less than a 3rd pick or you give him a chance to compete. He earned that right. He is not a back-up qb!

    16. Thigpen is a good qb, but do we really think he has a shot at winning the job? Cassel is piolis’ boy. He brouhgt him in to be the starting man. Yes, Thigpen should get a real shot at it, but the odds are just noy in his favor. Im with ya though, give the kid from Coastal Carolina a chance!!
And to Bulldog and everyone else who has ever thank those of us that serve the greatest country in the world, thank you. I think I can speak for everyone that does or has served, You guys are the reason we do it. And when I get over there later this year, the chiefs flag will be flown with pride. GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!
