[Kansas City.com] One day after completing their first draft under new general manager Scott Pioli, the Chiefs fired Chuck Cook, their director of college scouting.
Several of the Chiefs’ other scouts were also fired.
Cook had been the Chiefs’ director of college scouting for 12 years and a regional scout for 13 years before that. As the college scouting director, he coordinated the Chiefs’ preparations for the draft.
Members of the scouting department had been expecting a post-draft shake-up since Pioli was hired.

imagine that.

It’s not b/c they’re bad, it’s b/c Pioli wants his own guys. This stuff happens a lot w/ new GM’s.

what a surprise!

you sure its not that?  I sure hope Mr. Pioli knows ALOT more bout these guys than I do. We had a slew of choices at the num. 3 spot and this what we got? Id fire him too.

We must wait for the results on the field in the next couple of years before we pass judgement. Even in Herm’s first year the fans and media types gave him the benefit of the doubt. It was only after we had seen what a terrible coach Herm was, before we started laying into him. So with Pioli and Haley we must give them the benefit of the doubt, however there is NO DOUBT that that was one of the WORST drafts in the history of the team. If Haley coaches them well, they may turn out alright, but when you have the number three pick in the draft, you simply have to do better than that!! And the rest of the players were barely rated on most draft boards. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, but I’m sorry to say that I am an equal opportunity basher and For Pioli and Haley’s first draft, it was a disaster!!
Comment by Goldzone — April 28, 2009 @ 4:34 pm
wow. I really think everyone needs to chill out on who we drafted. So we didn’t get who everyone thought we should get. big deal. Everyone also said that Ryan Leaf was going to be a good QB. We haven’t even seen Pioli’s team on the field and still this goes on. I can bet money its going to be better than the “Lets draft Brodie Croyle and make a team around him” that we had before.

it will be alright when the season starts. Do not expect a 100% turn around but it will be alright

amen zyker, my thoughts exactly. Pioli said he did’nt care about how fast draft prospects ran or how high they could jump, he wanted to see how the players played football. Hopefully he has seen enough tape to see that these guys can play football. Dont care what anyone else thinks I am sure we can at least equal the production of the last 2 years (6 wins).

You guys all say Herm is a bad coach and I definitely agree that he was bad FOR THE CHIEFS. If he would have been hired by a good team…we could all be praising him if he was successful, basically what I’m saying is it’s all about the opportunity.
Back to the point though, Herm was an excellent drafter just look at the drafts he had…we currently have 19 out of a possible 26 people he has drafted (with 11 current starters). Not to say all of them have been stellar but they have contributed or shown flashes of at least average football players. Not to mention he followed up Dick V. who was probably historically one of the worst drafters of all time.
Pioli has a lot to live up to b/c he came from a spectacular NE Patriots team that historically has had good or even great drafts. Now I’m sure it’s in part a bit of luck but they obviously did their homework and Pioli saw everything unfold, even if he did very little when it came to drafting HE LEARNED from one of the best. Basically, I say give it a few years before judging this new regime…they don’t have too many resources to work with after our poor 2-14 season, besides a lot of young guys Herm got.

Josh, before you go bashing Dick Vermeil, and comparing Vermeil to Herm Edwards, I will leave you with one quote:
“This is what’s great about sports. This is what the greatest thing about sports is. You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don’t play it to just play it. That’s the great thing about sports: you play to win, and I don’t care if you don’t have any wins. You go play to win. When you start tellin’ me it doesn’t matter, then retire. Get out! ‘Cause it matters.”

As for the young guys Herm got, are you talking about guys like Michael Merritt and David Macklin, both released after never having played a down for the Chiefs? In conclusion, the only time Herm got the Chiefs to the playoffs were with Vermeil’s players, so what does that tell you? It tells me that Vermeil used the system the way it was supposed to be used, building through both free agency and the draft…the only thing that Vermeil had working against him, was Carl Peterson who would not let Vermeil make the football decisions, such as which players to keep (Larry Johnson) and which to trade away (Jared Allen)!

Jared Allen is a dumbass red-neck that got into trouble all the time with his drinking. I’m glad he’s gone.

Bulldog,
Did you read somewhere in my post me saying Herm was a better coach than Vermeil? B/c if I do recall I did not, all I said was he was a good DRAFTER!! So the whole record thing you posted was completely worthless but good job trying to emphasize a point I did not make. And also who cares if he drafted Michael Merritt! And also Macklin has been in the league forever and wasn’t drafted by KC. Anyways, I was never talking about better coach or anything of the sort…I was specifically talking about drafting and the possibility of Herm doing better on a good team. Basically, you took my very minuscule Vermeil comment and BLEW IT UP! You are ridiculous. My post was about SCOUTING and the DRAFT and about Pioli…wow.

Scouting and drafting, huh? Well than lets talk about that… Your scouts could be the best in the world, but, if your stubborn coach, who is good friends with the President and G.M., and they are on the same page, then who gets drafted? The President & G.M. went to the same college and want to draft a player who, by all accounts has baggage, and your scouting teams says don’t draft him because of his issues, Justin Medlock, and you draft him anyway, THEN WHAT THE HELL GOOD IS IT TO HAVE A SCOUTING TEAM FOR ANYWAY?
All the scouts really do, is offer their insight, the President/G.M. and the Coaching Staff usually confer and they make the pick, NOT THE SCOUTS, and not the owner, unless of course your name is Al Davis. I will bet you that the scouts missed on more than they hit on,why, because it is all a crap shoot anyway. The moment those kids get the money in their hands, everything changes, IT IS ALL ABOUT CHARACTER! You either have it, or you don’t…

How about reading what the article we are supposed to be commenting on is about… For all of you idiots who can not read, the article is about the firing of the Director of College Scouting, but, then again you can not read that either, LOL!
