[KC Chiefs.com] The Chiefs announced on Tuesday that RB Jamaal Charles was named the winner of the club’s Derrick Thomas Award and K Ryan Succop earned the team’s Mack Lee Hill Award. Both honors are voted on by Chiefs players and will be officially presented at the 40th Annual 101 Banquet on March 6th.
As a tribute to the late Derrick Thomas, the Chiefs annual Most Valuable Player Award was renamed in his honor following his death in February of 2000. The Mack Lee Hill Award is presented each year to the Chiefs rookie or first-year player who best exemplifies the spirit of the late Mack Lee Hill, who passed away during his second season with the Chiefs in ’65.
Charles led the Chiefs in rushing yards (1,120), yards from scrimmage (1,417), combined net yards (2,342) and total TDs (nine) in 2009, registering five 100-yard rushing games. Over the season’s final eight games, his 968 rushing yards ranked second in the league behind only Tennessee RB Chris Johnson (1,047), while his 1,126 yards from scrimmage over that span were topped only by Johnson (1,388). Charles became the first player in NFL history to rush for over 1,100 yards on fewer than 200 rushing attempts, needing just 190 carries to become the ninth player in Chiefs history to record a 1,000-yard campaign.
Succop made 86.21 percent of his FGs (25 of 29), tying for the best FG make percentage by a rookie since the AFL-NFL merger (min. 20 atts.). He established a Chiefs rookie record with 25 made field goals, surpassing the previous mark of 21 established by Hall of Fame K Jan Stenerud in ’67. He also nailed all 29 of his PATs to lead the team with 104 points, the second-highest point total ever accumulated by a Kansas City rookie, and the highest point total by any NFL rookie in 2009. Succop hit all 17 of his FG attempts from inside 40 yards in 2009.
