Crennel Hired as New Defensive Coordinator

[ESPN.com] Romeo Crennel has agreed to become defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Crennel, who replaces Clancy Pendergast, reunites with general manager Scott Pioli and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who all worked together in New England during their Super Bowl runs. Weis was hired by Kansas City last week following his ouster as Notre Dame’s coach.

The Chiefs informed Pendergast early Wednesday that they would be terminating his contract one year after hiring him from Arizona, sources close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Crennel will not start work for Kansas City for a couple of weeks because of a prior commitment — he’ll be the head coach of the East Team in the East-West college football all-star game on Jan. 23 in Orlando, Fla.

    5. Will Haley make them lose weight with the rest of the team in camp too? Seriously, this is a definite move in the right direction. Weis and Crennel are proven coordinators who surely can’t hurt the team.

    7. I’m so excited to have a d-cor. that might actually know how to put together and properly use a 3-4 defense.

    8. definitely a step in the right direction. I think this would put a really good staff together. The team is coming together, lets hope for a good draft (o-line and speed on defensive backs) and a good free agent or two (maybe A. boldin) and we are on the UP SLOPE ladies and gentlemen.
      GO CHIEFS!!!!

    9. Wow lots of positive comments on this site. Thats a first. I like the move too, but I am not real optimistic for next year yet. We have the coaches, but still need a lot of help on the field.

    10. Draft Questions as I didn’t get to watch many games this year due to blackouts via sucky play. I think we need someone that can absolutely dominate no matter position. If it is our biggest need awesome.

      1. What happens if Okung T Okla St. is drafted before we pick? Is Trent Williams T OU or the Tackle from Rutgers worthy of top 5?

      IF not options…

      2. As crazy as it sounds will we draft the DT from Alabama. Perfect Nose Guard for 3-4 DEF. Then trade away Dorsey?

      3. The Florida Corner seems to be an absolute stallion. first corner to start at FL as true freshman…might be a good option.

      4. Middle linebacker Alabama?

      5. How high will Gresham OU TE go in draft after injury?

      6. Jordan Shipley, Dezmon Briscoe are definitely good options at receiver second round?

      thoughts?

    11. I would rather have S. Berry from Tennessee with our first pick, and WR Mardy Gilyard with our second. Gilyard is fast, can catch, and he is one of the best kick returners. That would help us out. As far as the coaches go…. I’m satisfied as well!

    12. 1ST THINGS FIRST WE NEED O-LINE HELP AND WE NEED TO GET BRANDON CARR ONTO INTO THE NICKLE POSITION. HE HAS BURRIED US VERY FEW PLAYS HES MADE AND EVERY GAME I WAS ABLE TO SEE HE DOESNT FOLLOW THE BALL AT ALL NEED TO LET HIM SLOWLY WORK HIS WAY TO STARTER BUT IF HES OUR 2ND CB IM A LITTLE SCARED WE WONT BE AS SUCESSFUL AS WE SHOULD BE =NEED OL CB AND BACK UP RB WR’S ARE FINE BOWE CHAMBERS AND HAVING A FEW SLOT RECEIVERS IS GOOD NEED A DECENT FB AND TE POSITION IS ? CASSEL NEEDS TO READ THE DEFENSE BETTER AND WITH A GOOD LINE BREATH WE SHALL GO ATLEAST 9-10 WINS THIS SEASON I DONT SEE WHY WE COULDNT

    13. Things are def looking good in KC.

1st) We will not get rid of Dorsey if we draft a DT. He plays end now.

2.) If we dont get a Okung, i think they will take the olineman from Maryland.

3.)I think Brandon Carr is fine where he is right now, if anything if we draft a CB he will play nickle his 1st year.

4.) I think the TE from Oklahoma is worth the risk.

I cant wait till next season. I just hope Pioli doesnt want to draft Tebow..

    14. Hey Ryan, we only had one game that was blacked out. You must have been watching another team ;^)

    15. coaching staff is upgraded and the record will be upgraded from past seasons sooner than later

      Comment by doug w — January 14, 2010 @ 5:39 pm

    16. If they go for a QB, I was thinking Tebow, but now we have Weis, it might be Clausen. But I think well take Suh, Berry, or Okung. I don’t think there is a dominate OT in the draft. If we go for a OT, I’d like to see them trade down and get another pick from someone, then take the Maryland OT.

    17. Chief Tom,

My bad, you are right, they just weren’t on tv in my area because of bad play. Thanks for the correction.

    20. I know I have a lot of bias in my choice IF we should draft a DT with the first pick… but just what if the Premium SUHper power from NE could gain about 10-15 lbs at least to 315ish and try to be a nose guard? I know this isn’t typical because he is not as big as most nose guards.. but can you imagine the depth and competition we could have at D-line positions if we added Suh? He could play end or DT like Dorsey does and be just as effective as him at least.

*Sigh* At least it would be better than watching him go to the Lions or Rams… VOMIT.

    21. RedNGold4LIFE,

Unless the Chiefs plan to trade up to #1, which would cost way too much, their is no way we are getting Suh. The Chiefs better start looking at OT, maybe the safety from Tennessee (Berry), or the CB from Florida. Also, the guy that said we will draft Tebow or Clauson… their is no way in hell the Chiefs are taking a QB in the first two rounds. Do you realize how much the Chiefs have invested in Matt Cassell? He is our QB for a long time. We better get used to him.

      My Free agent pick-ups:
      DT. Vince Wolfolk (New England)
      T. Logan Makins (New England)
      LB. Demarco Ryans (Texans)

Trade for WR. Anquan Boldin (He will be on the trade block)

      Draft:
      1. S. Eric Berry (Tennessee)
      2. WR. Mardy Gilyard (Cincinnati) Great KR as well
      3. CB. Perrish Cox (Oklahoma State)
      4. T. Kyle Calloway (Iowa)
      5. C. Jake Kirkpatrick (TCU)
      6. QB. Johnothan Crompton (Tennessee)
      7. RB. LeGarout Blount (Oregon)
      8. LB. Perry Riley (LSU)
      9. WR. Kerry Meier (Kansas)
      10. S. Larry Asante (Nebraska)

    23. I wouldn’t say we’re ready for a superbowl. They haven’t even made any personnel moves yet. I think a superbowl next year is expecting too much. Maybe the following year.

    24. i think that the number one fan of the chiefs is Trent James… what a cute lil boo

      Comment by julia — January 19, 2010 @ 12:28 pm

    25. If this Berry kid out of Tennesse is really that amazing then lets take him and pick up a good o-lineman in the 2nd round and get a veteran free agent for the o-line… Younger and healthier than Goff. Go Chiefs Playoff run next year no more waiting please!! Down with the Donkey’s and even San Diego is getting tired of their team winning the division and doing nothing with it. Lets take the AFC West and get a playoff game at Arrowhead with our new group. How long did Tony G. Sign With Atlanta for. He should come back as a Chief for 1 more year at the end of his career.

      Comment by Chief Brad — January 19, 2010 @ 8:54 pm

    26. To answer my own question… Tony Signed a 5 yr. $35 million contract. oh well he will probably do the 1 day contract thing at the very end to go out in a chief uniform. Tamba is the man now can you imagine our pass rush if we had kept Jared Allen and Devoloped Tamba like this. It would be the 2nd coming of D.T. and Neil Smith with a double edge threat. Why did Carl Trade Allen he was so dominant and is leading the Vikings D to a superbowl run. I like our team but he is the NFL Defensive player of the year. How could the man that loved D.T’s style trade a Jared Allen. He knew what a weapon off he edge can do as well as anybody and let him get away from us. Painful everytime I see him do his cattle tie sack dance.

    27. hopefully no black outs next year

      Comment by BAYBALFREDO — January 20, 2010 @ 8:17 am

    28. Id love to get Tony G back for at least a couple seasons, def if we are in the playoffs. But as stated above i think if he comes back it will be a one day contract to retire at the begining of a season home opener.

Im not sure if any of you know of Mount Union College? The most winnings Division 3 college football program. Anyways a couple years ago Peire Garcon from Mount was drafted by the Colts, and well he stepped in for Anthony Gonzalez when he got hurt and actually started getting a lot of looks instead of Reggie Wayne..I think he is a FA this year and they should take a look at him.

Another WR from Mount Union will enter the draft Cecil Shorts..This season for Mount he had 90 catches for 1,551 yards and 17 touchdowns receiving, 206 rushing yards and eight touchdowns..Someone to look at later in the draft for sure..Hes listed as 6-2 and 200lbs..

    29. HuskerMagic yeah I know there is no way the Chiefs would get Suh.. I was just dreaming there for a minute. With that handle, you must be a Big Red fan as well. As much as I can’t wait for the next Husker season it also sucks that we can’t watch Suh in Red anymore!!! BUUUUUUUH!!!

I agree that we should get Eric Berry at the 5th pick IF he is still there AND there is a plan to either draft, trade for, or get another OT from free agency. Hell we probably need a guard too, but OT is a MUST.

We will know just how good Russell Okung ‘should’ be after the combine and if he is the dominant OT of the entire group then there is no way we would pass on him even if Berry is still there.

      Comment by RedNGold4LIFE — January 22, 2010 @ 6:23 pm

    30. If we do get a safety we should get Darrell Stuckey. That kid is so underrated because of the bad secondary KU had this year. Plus he will go to the 3rd or 4th round.

      Comment by michael diedrich — January 24, 2010 @ 3:58 pm

    34. I agree with everyone..I like what’s happening with KC. Herm Edwards wanted change and he messed up a playoff team. Getting rid of Jared Allen, Scott Fujita, etc, etc. It was good seeing them play against each other last week. Hope Fujita gets a Superbowl ring. I think in about 2 to 3 years, our team will be a playoff team once more…
