[SI.com] With one move, the Kansas City Chiefs took a big step toward bolstering a shaky offensive line and making up for a gamble six years ago that came back to haunt them.
The Chiefs on Tuesday announced the signing of free agent left guard Ryan Lilja, a 59-game starter for the Indianapolis Colts who was claimed off waivers from Kansas City in 2004. Terms were not disclosed.
Lilja brings plenty of big-game experience to a Kansas City team that finished its last two seasons with records of 2-14 and 4-12. He started eight playoff games for Indianapolis, including two Super Bowls.

nice signing…our line is starting to come together…just need a solid RT…maybe draft a center in the mid or late rounds since wiegman is gona be 37…I think we should draft ERIC BERRY with the first pick…can’t wait for april’s draft!!

I agree get Berry first! Then, take the best OT available with our second pick. Niswanger may beat out Casey at center–he is getting old. But, Casey has been very consistant over his career. Lilja is a good pickup because we needed a left guard.

Maurikice Pouncey, the C/G from Florida is predicted to go somewhere early in the second round. I still think tackle with the first pick just to solidify that o line some more. If okung is not there dont reach for buluga, or any other mid first round guard.
scenerio 1:
If okung is there take him and go after chad jones (S) from LSU in the second round and Jerry Hughes OLB/ from TCU.
If Okung is gone in the first round already, take Eric Berry in the first and go after that tackle from Indiana, as well as Jerry Hughes.

If we don’t solidify our Offensive Line then the 60 million dollar signing of Matt Cassel is going to be a waste!

in the draft the chief’s have to get eric berry with the number 5 pick also they need to find a way to wrap up golden tate in the draft…

Draft Berry in the first and Jared Veldheer with the first second round.
Comment by Qbintheclub — March 17, 2010 @ 2:18 am
I think we need Berry, DT Terrance Cody for the mammoth beast in the middle which we don’t have, and then an OL. I also hear a trade rumor.. Dorsey to the Rams for Adam Carriker and a 2nd round pick. That means we’d have 3 2nd rounders and could get 2 OL in the 2nd.
1. Berry
2a. Cody
2b. OL
2c.(if dorsey trade happens) OL/TE

Great signing by Scott Pioli,i still think we should take
1.okung
2.beluga
3.berry
This gives us a loaded o-line
there’s no value to draft a safety top 5.writing that i still would be thrilled to have him on our team.

noah,
where did you hear about this trade with st louis? what website. im curious to see this article.
Comment by eplueger — March 17, 2010 @ 1:27 pm
The St Louis trade rumor came from Rumor Central (in) on ESPN 14 March. It was a hypothetical trade. Here is the text:
ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando receives millions and millions of emails every day (approximately), and he took time out to answer a handful of them on Sunday morning. One emailer brought up an interesting hypothetical: What if the St. Louis Rams trade Adam Carriker (who we know some teams have called to inquire about) plus the No. 33 overall pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for Glenn Dorsey?
The key for the Rams would be to figure out whether or not Dorsey could make an impact similar to what they’d get by selecting Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy first overall, and the financials could be part of it. Suh and McCoy would make an historic sum for a DT if they’re taken No. 1 overall; Dorsey makes pretty big money, but it’s No. 5 overall money from two drafts ago (he’s entering the third year of a five-year, $33 million pact, and 2013 is an option year). More importantly, Dorsey might benefit greatly from a switch back to a 4-3 scheme. In K.C., he’s stuck in a 3-4, and it’s not a natural fit for him as either an NT or a 3-4 DE.
Mike Sando
Glenn’s fit better in St. Louis
“Durability concerns were singled out as the primary weakness. Dorsey has played in 31 of 32 games with the Chiefs, starting 30 of them. The Scouts Inc. report [prior to the 2008 draft] said Dorsey would fit best in a one-gap scheme that would allow him to get upfield and disrupt offenses. The Rams are running that type of scheme. The Chiefs are not.”

Wow! Bucky Brooks on nfl.com has a new mock draft and he has us passing on Suh and taking Bulaga. If Suh slips to us, I think we have to take him, make a trade for Dorsey and get a tackle later. No matter what happens we are in a good spot this year. Any of those top players are going to make me happy.
Comment by Jeff in VA — March 17, 2010 @ 6:29 pm
I agree. with that no. 5 pick they really cant go wrong: Berry, Okung, Suh, Beluga, McClain, or Haden would all be great picks. The first round is so overhyped anyway. First rounders rarely live up to their expecations, unless they are o lineman. I am more curious in the two second round picks and the third round pick. I think the second round is going to be very interesting. I hope they go after both Jerry Hughes (OLB/DE) and if the next pick in the second round should be an o lineman if the didnt address that need in the first round, or if they picked up a tackle in the first round, they should go after gilyard (WR) with that other pick.

K.C. need’s Eric Berry on the Defense he’s like a Troy Palumalu or a Ed Reed he will just bring Life to our D…
Comment by james — March 18, 2010 @ 1:37 am
You may be right James. Eric Berry may perhaps be the next Troy P. If he is that kinda guy I sure hope we end up with him at # 5 then. But….. O line O line O line. Everyone know we need it. We better get that too. Is Eric Berry and a few good O linemen too much too ask for? I sure hope not.

In an NFL.com story about Berry injuring his toe in a pro day work out, it mentions that Crennell had dinner with DT Dan Williams (14th on Kiper’s Big Board). This is interesting. There are many ways to read into this.

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports it is looking like the Kansas City Chiefs will select a defensive player with their first-round draft choice in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Comment by Noah — March 18, 2010 @ 2:21 pm
KC will take Eric Berry..The signing of Wiegman and Lilja almost screams Eric Berry…They then will go for Oline with one of their 2nd round picks..
In stated above about Carriker for Dorsey I would be alright with that…
KC draft will look like this
1. S
2a OT
2b WR
3 ILB (DE if we did get Carriker for Dorsey)
4 DB
5 TE
5 OL
5 QB/RB
Comment by Dan B from Ohio — March 18, 2010 @ 6:32 pm
Ideally, if the Rams things goes we can draft Berry at 5thg, then, with the second round pick from Rams either NT or OT according who’s left and who’s top the board, so the KC second can go NT or OT and the other second from ATL, a LB. I’d like to go for Maimi U TE in the 3rd or 4th (dunno his draft status now) Jimmy Graham : still raw but can be the beast TG was for us.

Wow. Two attempts and you still can’t spell. “Familiar”
Comment by PA Chiefs Fan — March 19, 2010 @ 11:36 am
This is a great signing! But they are not gonna trade dorsey to the rams. They will take berry at #5. Then they should go NT cody with the first 2nd round pick. Then take Brandon Spikes with the other. I don’t care how bad he ran the 40, the man can play. I’m tired of our defense being so bad. U get a d-lineman, linebacker, and secondary player. And they would all start. If they take o-lineman he won’t start because they have there starters now.

haha kcchiefs19692003…need to go back to grade school and learn how to spell???hahaha dumbass
Comment by mike41 — March 20, 2010 @ 7:04 pm
The name is BULAGA from Iowa … good god, at least spell his name right.
and yes English is my second language.
mike41 – the word is “needs” not need, and when you also use the word needs you are missing who is required to go back to. With the periods at the end of the name, it means you are referring to me as who you are talking to, afterwards its to whom you are speaking to. So I ask you again to please check your grammer also. Since this is a sports talk board, I won’t ridicule you more with your sentence structure that you should so know how to use.
PA Chiefs Fan – Wow. Two attempts and you still can’t spell. “Familiarâ€
It should have read like this – Wow, after two attempts you still can’t spell, “familiarâ€
It should read like this – haha kcchiefs19692003 needs to go back to grade school and learn how to spell!!! hahaha dumbass
After “wow” there should be a comma which of course you happen to miss or maybe had no idea when and where to put one at. Then when you use “familiar”, in quotations its not required to be capitalized. Only nouns are would be required for capitalization. Also you refered it to a question at the end of your sentence structure which referes to that you are questioning yourself whether or not this is a feasable solution for your comment.
Before you comment and make your self look like fools, learn the language also. I do believe you all are Americans and English is a first language for you.

Wow! Who cares if someone misspells something? Why are people always attacking people? Why can’t people just post their opinions without the personal attacks and name-calling?
Comment by Jeff in VA — March 22, 2010 @ 8:19 pm
I like Jarred Page and I liked B. Pollard. Whats up with page? is he healthy?
We need to hope Glen Dorsey matures this year and Tyson Jackson. They are also being paid well. If it was not for Tamba we would have no pass rush.

i for one agree with jeff in va stop picking on people itd not right if i miss spell something then oh well its not my fault that i have a hard time doing so so grow up or get off of here………..
Comment by michael diedrich — March 23, 2010 @ 12:34 am
Yeah really guys/girls who cares if someone does not spell something correct..Im sure you got the point of what he was trying to say..
Any word if they are going to resign Mike Brown? He played one of his best seasons with us last year..I think he deserves some security.
If KC drafts Berry you can probably kiss Page’s but goodbye..I think McGraw is an excellent backup, him and Dejaun Morgan are great ST players every game.
If KC doesnt doesnt have the option for Okung or Berry they will move out of their draft spot and pick up another 2nd round pick…Then draft a Olineman later in the 1st round.
This is a make or break year for Dorsey, so much so that if he doesnt produce I dont think we will get anything of real value for him as we would right now..So Pioli has some thinking to do..Jackson still has another year left of his value in my opinion.
Samething goes for Cassel he has been given the tools this offseason to show us what hes made of. The Oline signings (Wiegmann and Lilja) should help greatly..Thomas Jones will help open up our offense. I think right now with Bowe and Chambers he shouuld have enough targets, although I think getting another proven WR for the slot wouldnt hurt..I say if he chokes and just doesnt get it done this season KC will draft a QB next year. They may not get rid of Cassel but will atleast have a backup plan.
Comment by Dan B from Ohio — March 23, 2010 @ 11:20 am
Does anyone feel like we need defense more than offense? Everyone keeps talking about offensive line! The defense sucks and they need some playmakers. They will not take offensive line in the first or second round!! They will go defense.
Comment by Alan — March 23, 2010 @ 7:48 pm
Yes we need help on defense. Keep in mind that a good offense makes a defense better by keeping them off the field. With that said, I don’t really care who we pick at 5. We can’t go wrong with Berry or any of the top 5 OTs. I think we’re in a great spot this year. Offense has been getting all the love in free agency, defense should get all the love in the draft.
