With the 5th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected S Eric Berry out of Tennessee.

Berry (6’0″, 211) is the type of player a team can build a defense around. He can play any position in the secondary, is a willing participant on special team coverage, and can handle return duties. Known for his outstanding ballhawk skills, he fell seven yards shy of breaking the NCAA all-time record for most yards gained on interception returns.

A three-year starter for the Volunteers, Berry intercepted 14 passes for 494 return yards and scored three touchdowns. He also recorded 245 tackles (157 solo) and three sacks. He was a two-time unanimous All-American (2008 & 2009) and was the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award Winner, given annually to the top defensive back in college football.

    3. Happy with this one. I would have been good with trading down and getting Dez Bryant if we didn’t get Berry. We have two years to be good, lets go LB or OT with the next pick.

    4. Great pick up. Hopefully Crennel can coach up the D and use him like Ed Reed

    5. finally we make a pick that makes perfect sense…everyone knows that quality players like this are can’t miss opportunities.

i’ll try not to hate on pioli if this turns out to be a bust (let’s not think about that though)

    7. Pioli was looking for his Rodney Harrison from his Patriot days. He found better.

    8. YES! He was voted team captain. Academic Honor roll. Great closing speed. Leader, smart and fast. I love it.

Looks like Brown, USC or Saffold, Indiana, may be available for our second pick. Maybe even Kindle.

    9. Love Berry, but not a fan of the pick. Would rather pick OT in the 1st and S in the 2nd. Hoping we can land Saffold, Campbell, or Brown with one of our 2nds

    10. ahhhh, Clausen may be available too.

    11. I can’t see the Chiefs drafting Clausen. What would that say about Cassel? I just think we have a lot more positions that should be upgraded over QB right now.

    12. I’m just gitty about picking Eric Berry! Was hoping that Dez Bryant would still be on the board, I like Shipley and Tate – either one would work for me. I didn’t hear them talk much about Terence Cody is he no longer on our draft board? Still hoping to get a descent OL before it is all over, does anyone know if there is any left?

    13. I was elated when we took Berry, and i thought it was so cool because he was elated too. Berry has heart. Derrick Thomas had heart too. I’m going to buy a Berry jersey. I have never bought a rookie’s jersey, but Berry is different. He will be great, I can just feel it.

    14. I love the Berry pick. I would be absolutely shocked if the Chiefs picked at 36. With so many QB’s left on the board they will trade down. I hope to see WR Golden Tate reunited with Charlie Wise.

      Can’t wait for tonight!

    15. Not sure we can afford to not take Cody if he’s there at 36. We need a beast in the middle and he’s the only one out there.

    16. BERRY! thankyou KC… I hope we don’t stop there with that awesome pick. GO CHIEFS!

    17. This looks like a “Ronnie Lott”(all man) type pick and that worked out pretty well for the 49er’s back in the day. I was glad it worked out like this and we didn’t trade down. We just drafted a leader, not just a player.

    18. Great pick KC!! Berry is going to be a great leader on and off the field for the Chiefs!..

I read this morning (cringing) our 2nd pick may be Clausen. However it doesnt hurt as bad to take him in the 2nd then in the 1st..So if we get him because I believe in Cassel so much he will be a good backup. I also seen Bruce Cambell could be our 2 2nd round pick..Not bad…Id prefer not a QB in the 2nd, but I guess he would be a steal in the 2nd wouldnt he?

    19. Can’t wait for this guy to get on the field.. PLAYMAKER on the field.. he is also a great guy with a great attitude who fits perfectly with the right 53.

    20. I wonder if KC will try and get Taylor Mays?..Could be the begining of a very good secondary..Or atleast I hope they resign Mike Brown.

      Comment by Dan B from Ohio — April 23, 2010 @ 1:01 pm

    21. Dan B- Why the hell would we draft 2 safety’s?

      Comment by Chief Tom — April 23, 2010 @ 1:06 pm

    22. There are a lot of good players left. We should be happy with our next pick, even if it is Clausen. LOL.

    23. Berry is a perfect pick for us! I thought it was awesome when they showed him on the phone right before they announced the pick. He was ecstatic and said, “I always wanted to be a Chief!” That’s my type of guy! Plus, wasn’t the last Tennessee DB we drafted a guy by the name of Dale Carter? I’d say he worked out pretty good!

    24. dexter mccluster is a good pick up. i just question using your first 2nd rd pick on him. prob could have got him with the second 2nd round pick.

      Comment by eplueger — April 23, 2010 @ 4:32 pm

    25. I would’ve rather seen Terrence Cody picked. A monster like that on the nose would’ve been sweet. McCluster is a beast, and if he could be a welker-esque slot guy and a good punt returner, he could help us out. Every draft reaffirms how little I know about who we’re gonna draft. I hope the chiefs could somehow get cody still.

    26. Eric Berry! My new nickmame for him will EB-Kanobi “The Jedi Warrior” LOL
