Denver linebacker D.J. Williams, the team’s leading tackler and one of its captains, was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of drunken driving and might miss Sunday’s game against the Chiefs at Invesco Field in Denver.

Williams, who pleaded guilty in 2005 to another drunken-driving charge, didn’t practice with the Broncos on Friday. Coach Josh McDaniels said he was uncertain of whether Williams would be available Sunday.

If Williams is absent, Denver’s linebackers would take another hit. Second-year defender Robert Ayers didn’t practice this week because of a foot injury. He won’t play Sunday, and Williams’ status wasn’t included when the Broncos released their injury report Friday.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said Friday that, although it could be an advantage if two of the Broncos’ starting linebackers don’t play, it also might compel Denver to swap between 3-4 and 4-3 defensive fronts, something it has done in recent weeks. Weis said that could cause headaches for the Chiefs.
