Chiefs Win Tampering Claim

[Chiefs Blog] The Chiefs won their tampering claim against the Detroit Lions, in a sense.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled the Lions were indeed guilty of tampering with the Chiefs last year when they spoke publicly about their desire to acquire Chiefs players and contacted safety Jarrad Page or his agent while his playing rights belonged to the Chiefs.

Winning the case won’t benefit the Chiefs much. They do get to swap fifth-round picks with the Lions in this year’s draft, meaning Kansas City gets the ninth pick in the fifth round while the Lions get the 23rd pick.

Detroit also has to forfeit the seventh-round selection it acquired in a trade with Denver last year. That’s the extent of Detroit’s penalty, though it could change if either team decides to appeal the ruling. It must do so by Feb. 28.

The Chiefs declined to comment on Goodell’s ruling.
