[ESPN.com] The Chiefs have fired head coach Todd Haley, effective immediately. The move comes a day after an ugly 37-10 loss to the New York Jets — the team’s fifth loss in six games.
The announcement from the team:
“This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs,” Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd’s contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future.”
The Chiefs were 19-27 during Haley’s tenure with the club and claimed the AFC West Division Championship in 2010.
The Chiefs will hold a news conference to discuss the announcement later today.

Happy trails Haley

It had to happen sooner or later, glad it was sooner! Let’s go Bill Cowher, it’s time to get back to the sidelines!

This was the right decision. Perhaps Todd can get another Offensive Coordinator position, Head Coach??? NAWWW

COWHER WILL NOT COACH….. I am so glad he is gone. NOW depending on the coach I can try to get season tickets again…..

When he caused that penalty yesterday, I thought to myself, “he just lost his job”. I swear!! I kept getting online last night to see if it was really going to happen, and then at work this morning we had internet issue, of course! At lunch I checked this site, and BOOM!, there it was, I can’t say at all I was surprised. Actually, it was a bit of intuition I suppose.
I wonder if that indeed had anything to do with it. The Hunt family will not tolerate obscene behavior, they shouldn’t have to. Perhaps he has some good traits, and perhaps it could’ve waited three games…I’m not a big fan of the “terminating before end of season move” when anyone does it…but, something major must’ve happened, I mean, it’s Christmastime for goodness sake:-) To: Todd and family From: Clark, “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” OC maybe…maybe…

Bill Muir should have been fired 1st – I mean the play calling in the Jet Game was ridiculous!!!

Thank God that’s over…. I hope for Bill Cowher, but Jeff Fisher would work.

When we get a new coach Muir will be gone. Not our style.

Cower and Dungy would be great picks, but neither is in the Belichick coaching tree. I wouldn’t get your hopes up for either one of them.

Tammy, I thought the exact same thing at the exact same time. We must have ESPN–I mean ESP.
Comment by Jeff in VA — December 12, 2011 @ 7:04 pm
HA! That’s funny Jeff, thanx!! (I wonder if Haley knew too)
Comment by Tammy H — December 12, 2011 @ 7:10 pm
We could hire Dungy and trade for Manning. He’s got 5 or 6 more years.

Holy Smokes! That sounds amazing!!! No seriously, wow!! Is that feasible???!!! Where’s Tony fall in the coaching tree? Would Pioli and his ego get out of the way for Tony’s Timid Tactics? (albeit successful!!) It keeps Peyton if the AFC, which is where he wants to be I’m sure…man, just pondering the possibilities is making me smile more than I’ve smiled since…well, since we shut-out the Raidas:-)

One thing I liked about Haley, other than his passion, was he always took responsibility. I always said it was his fault. Herm Edwards NEVER took responsibility, he always used to say, the players have to make the play.

Whoops, that should read, “He” always said it was his fault. Wish you could edit your own posts one here.

I think getting rid of Haley was probably the right move. I just hope that the Chiefs organization puts some real thought into getting a real winner. It is very frustrating living 6 hrs away, spending a ton of money to watch a half ass team stink up the joint. We have been mediocre for too many years. It is time to be a force again like we used to be!!!!!!!!

Which one was on c’mon man? I missed it. WesternKsChief…I feel ya…yes, please take some time into getting a real winner, a good fit, a lasting fit, with the right personality to endure

It was time Haley’s need for control wouldn,t allow him to be a coach!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know guys as Chiefs Fans they always do this 2 us Give us something to keep hanging on for next year!!! Am I wrong??? I am a frustrated and faithful Chiefs fan of 22 years now and ever since Vermeil retired I hate 2 say it our offense has been an embarassment!!!! Our defense was bad when vermeil was coaching but when we scored 40 points a game nobody cared. Then came in Herm who did make some good draft picks it is just we live in a what have u done 4 me lately society and patience is not a virtue with football fans. Herm gets all the blame but he made some good draft picks that are playmakers now on this team but he inherited a veteran team and had no choice 2 go the youth movement in rebuilding this franchise!!! Then on paper 9-7/4-12/ and 2-14 3 years and gone. Obviously when ur record goes down year in year out the coach is the first 2 go. I think if we would have given crazy Herms ass that 4th year we would have been 6-10 and then on our way up as a team but no we bring in Whom Larry Johnson called out a coach that has never played in the trenches and nobody could respect the fact that he never been there done that!!!! If Ur boss at work has no experience in the field and you have been doing it 4 10 plus years wouldnt u look at him crazy 2!!! My point is u can blame HC/OC/DC and GMs all day but there real problem is CLARK HUNT. The man inherited the tteam from his Father and Clark unlike his Father is all about the money and Doesnt give a FUCK about the team or its Fans unlike his father who was all about the players and the Fans R.I.P LAMAR and God Bless u All true Chiefs fans really miss u and miss ur vision cuz ur son doesnt have a clue!!!!

I would like to see a new coach come in that will make the Chiefs Super Bowl contenders for the next 15 years and not some quick-fix bandaid who MIGHT get the team there in the next 2 years then the team goes back to being what they were back the 70′s and early 80′s again.
Comment by Lloyd — December 13, 2011 @ 4:23 am
Adam, I disagree with you about Haley. Haley had the resume to be a HC. He suceeded at every level as he progressed through coaching ranks. He was a superbowl OC before getting the HC job. It was natural that he get an opportunity. It’s our misfortune that he didn’t have what it takes to be a good HC. For someone who never played football he sure did a good job as an OC. He’s been around football all his life. You don’t have to have played the game to have the knowledge to be a leader. Herm Edwards played football and he was a worse HC than Haley. My point is I think he earned his opportunity to be HC. This team bought in on Haley last year, they respected him. Larry Johnson is a thug that no one respects, probably not a good person to listen to.
The blame for our failure this year has to fall on Pioli and Haley. Both of which have taken responsibility for the failures, unlike Herm. Clark’s job is to hire his staff, the staff’s job is to get the right players and coaches. It’s the staffs failure not Clark Hunt. Pioli might be a failure too, we’ll have to wait and see. If he turns out to be a failure then we can blame Clark.

Good luck with that Lloyd. Coaches only hang around for about 10 years max now days.

Haley deserved a shot and he will get another one somewhere else. He did loose his best defender and offensive player this year and had to work with a QB that he did’nt want to start. Don’t get me wrong, he was far from perfect but don’t forget how bad Belichek was on his first go around in Cleveland. Not saying Haley will ever be that good and that’s hope he does’nt comeback and have some big wins at Arrowhead!
