Chiefs Reportedly Interview Philbin for Head Coaching Vacancy

[Kansas City.com] Perhaps interim head coach Romeo Crennel isn’t such a slam dunk for the Chiefs’ permanent job after all.

Multiple reports on Wednesday had Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin interviewing in Kansas City on Wednesday night for the Chiefs’ head coaching position.

The Chiefs may have to wait a while if they decide Philbin is their man. According to the NFL’s anti-tampering rules, the Chiefs cannot hire Philbin or any other coach who is working for another team until that team’s season is finished.

Working coaches on teams with a playoff bye are, however, allowed to interview with other teams before the first playoff game starts, provided their current employer agrees to the interview.

It’s unlikely that general manager Scott Pioli would wait a lengthy period of time for Philbin or any other candidate to become available to coach the Chiefs.

In Philbin’s case, the Packers’ season won’t be finished until Jan. 15 at the earliest. That’s when Green Bay, the top-seeded team in the NFC, plays its divisional-round playoff game.

Green Bay’s season won’t be finished for another month if the Packers advance to the Super Bowl.
