The Kansas City Chiefs have a quick turnaround for Week Nine after extending their losing streak to five games in a home defeat to the Oakland Raiders Sunday. They now travel to San Diego for a Thursday night divisional game against the struggling Chargers.

By nearly any account, the Chiefs (1-6) have spiraled to the bottom of the NFL totem pole this season. In fact, one of the more amazing stats is the Chiefs have not held a lead in regulation this season, a phenomenal indictment of the dysfunction in Kansas City. According to ESPN, it’s been at least since 1940 that a team has went seven games without ever holding a lead in regulation time.

The Chiefs short work-week will also involve deciding on a quarterback to play against the Chargers. Brady Quinn, who got the start against the Raiders, was sent to the sidelines with a head injury in the first half of the 26-16 loss as one-point favorites. Former starter Matt Cassel did fill in adequately with 218 passing yards and a late touchdown against the Raiders. That performance leaves head coach Romeo Crennel with a decision to make as to who takes the snaps just four days later against San Diego. Early word out of Kansas City is Quinn will get the start if he’s cleared from concussion symptoms by Thursday night.

In San Diego, the Chiefs hook a team that hasn’t been much better in recent weeks. The Chargers have lost three straight games—all in frustrating fashion—that leaves them on the verge of their season also falling apart.

The NFL odds don’t figure to have these teams separated by a whole lot given their recent form. The Chargers did beat Kansas City 37-20 in Week 4 as 1-point road favorites and are certainly the more talented team on paper. With that said, this game could go any direction and a field goal or less seems the eventual difference.
