Without Bowe, Passing Game More Inept for Chiefs

As if the season couldn’t get any worse for the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, they’re best receiver, WR Dwayne Bowe is on the shelf for the rest of the year after breaking multiple ribs in a 30-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

KC is getting ready to take on its arch rivals, the Oakland Raiders on Sunday as 2 ½-point underdogs on the NFL odds at the O.co Coliseum.

The Chiefs already ranked 31st in the league in passing at 186.4 yards per game before the injury to Bowe. Bowe has 59 catches for 801 yards and three touchdowns on the campaign. No one else on the team has more than 41 catches (Dexter McCluster), 396 yards (Tony Moeaki), or one receiving touchdown (five players).

The pressure is going to be on WR Jonathan Baldwin, who will have to step up as a starter alongside McCluster in all likelihood. Baldwin, formerly a highly touted prospect out of the University of Pittsburgh, has just 18 catches for 261 yards on the campaign.

This really isn’t going to help a pair of quarterbacks that are really bad as well. QB Brady Quinn has started the last few games, but QB Matt Cassel could still be in the fold as well. These two men have only combined to thrown for 2,590 yards and eight scores versus 17 picks on the season.

The only bright spot for the Chiefs is that the Oakland defense has just been flat out horrendous. The Raiders rank 26th or worse in every major defensive category, including dead last in the league in scoring at 30.9 points per game allowed. The club has lost six games in a row both SU and ATS, and in those games, opponents have averaged scoring 35.8 points per game against it.
