The 2008 NFL Draft was very interesting, and full of intrigue. Teams had to plan a little different this year and if you remember my article “Defense Wins Championships” I wrote the following at the conclusion: “The 2008 NFL Draft must deliver us a young leader on defense, and a future all-pro offensive tackle. In addition to this, we need someone to re-teach our defense how to tackle, and a leader that can lead by example.” The Chiefs did exactly that. So, they planned well and had a bit of luck on their side.

As a matter of fact, planning was more important this year than any other year because of the action taken by the NFL to cut the time between picks. The first round had been cut from 15 minutes, to 10 minutes. The allocated time to pick for round two and on had also been cut from 10 minutes, to 7 minutes. This put more pressure on all NFL teams to be better prepared for their selections during the draft.

Who remembers the debacle that occurred during the 2003 NFL draft with Byron Leftwich of Marshall? That’s when the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars had the Minnesota Vikings on the telephone, with both teams trying to make a trade to move up so they could pick Leftwich. Neither team (Baltimore and Jacksonville) was able to strike a deal with Minnesota, but the negotiations went on for so long that Minnesota’s 15-minute time limit expired, and as a result, Jacksonville picked ahead of the Vikings, and was able to select Leftwich without having to give anything up.

This year’s draft wasn’t as chaotic as that, but it had its’ own issues to deal with. To commence, the draft started three hours later than scheduled. Also, the first player in this year’s draft, Jake Long of the University of Michigan, was drafted the day before the actual draft! Furthermore, there were 35 Wide Receivers drafted overall, however there were none drafted in the first round. Also, of the first 12 players selected, ONLY three were offensive players. In addition to this, a total of 13 quarterbacks were drafted, 23 running backs, 26 offensive tackles, 24 defensive ends, 30 linebackers, and 30 cornerbacks. In short, 117 defensive players were drafted, and 132 offensive players were drafted, and only three special teams’ players were drafted. And Mr. Irrelevant (the last person selected) for the 2008 draft was David Voboro, OLB, of Idaho. He was the 252nd selection in this year’s draft. Moreover, there were a total of 34 trades amongst NFL teams during this year’s event.

It has already been established that the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers had the best grade in this year’s draft. There was a lot of young talent in this year’s draft. The young boys are not only taking over our society, they are also taking over the NFL. Just ask Brett Favre. After all, football is a kid’s sport. This 2008 draft class has the potential of being a great class like the 1981, 1984, 1996 or the 2004 draft classes. Those draft classes have names like Ray Lewis, Keyshawn Johnson, John Elway, Dan Marino, and Larry Johnson attached to them. So, I chose 25 players that I watched in college, or have studied (including some film) that I believe will be noticeable this football season. I call this my “sleeper” list. A sleeper is a player that is under the radar, and may not be considered an elite player. The following is ONLY five of my list of 25 rookies chosen from this year’s draft. The remaining 20 players on my “sleeper” list will appear periodically. I will begin with a list of juniors entering the NFL.

1) Kevin Smith, RB, Central Florida, 6’1”, 211 lbs., Junior, drafted (3rd Round - 1st Pick) by the Detroit Lions. Barry Sanders part II, Smith led the nation is scoring (180 pts.) and rushing yards (2,567). He has great moves, and great vision. Hopefully, he can bring a rushing attack back to Detroit. Speaking of Barry Sanders, Smith almost broke his single-season rushing record of 2,628 yards set in 1988, while Sanders was at Oklahoma State. He may not come out as strong as Adrian Peterson did last year, but give him time and let’s see how good he becomes.

2) Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas, 6’1”, 210 lbs., 4.4 in 40 yard dash, Junior, drafted (1st Round – 22nd Pick) by the Dallas Cowboys. The 2004 Tulsa World All-State Running Back, and backup to Darren McFadden, has been the subject of a heated debate including running back, Rashard Mendenhall. He rushed for 1,162 yards last year. Jones will go well with Marian Barber III and provide that 1-2 punch that the NFL has embraced to wear down defenses. With the offensive line of the Cowboys, I expect big things from Felix Jones.

3) Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois, 5’11”, 225 lbs., Junior, drafted (1st Round – 23rd Pick) by the Pittsburgh Steelers. We are grateful that nothing happened to Rashard when he was robbed in Chicago this week. We may not have gotten the opportunity to see his best talent. He rushed for 1,681 yards last year. And this year, Willie Parker has already welcomed his new teammate to Pittsburgh, and is ready to introduce him to the rest of the NFL world.

4) Kenny Phillips, FS, Miami (The “U”), 6’2”, 212 lbs., Junior, drafted (1st Round – 32nd Pick), drafted by the New York Giants. Phillips reminds me of Ed Reed without the big numbers. He’s not is Sean Taylor’s class, but has the potential to be one of the best safeties in the NFL. His instincts and awareness are outstanding, and his range is fantastic. I am looking forward to some big hits from Phillips this season.

5) Will Franklin, WR, Missouri, 6’2”, 214 lbs., 4.3 in 40 yard dash, Senior, drafted (Round 4 – 6th Pick) by the Kansas City Chiefs. Nephew or former Cincinnati Bengal, Darnay Scott, his 143 receptions and 2,125 yards ranks 4th in Mizzou history. He has no problem going across the middle, and has good speed. Lord knows that the Chiefs need as many receivers as they can get. I hope that he performs well throughout his career.

The 2008 NFL Draft was the best that it’s ever been in my lifetime. Of course this is my own personal opinion. I watched the entire draft on television for two days, while sitting in front of my laptop performing the necessary research of all of the draft picks. The fact that the Kansas City Chiefs drafted defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, from Louisiana State University, alone makes this draft the greatest ever. Remember “Defense Wins Championships”? Well, the Chiefs have officially begun to create that defense that will win that Championship. By drafting Glen Dorsey we now have the foundation that is needed to possess a championship defense. Not to mention an intimidating defense. As a continuing student of the game of football, I have always been taught that you build a defense beginning with the defensive line. And the same is true for the offense. More importantly, the defense needs to possess an aggressive spirit. A spirit like hmmm….Derrick Thomas, for example. I would define his aggressive spirit as the following: a talent that can disrupt an offense. A force that can make an opponent question himself, and a strength that can run through the double team. And last, but not least, a PASSION that is extraordinary. That was D.T., and that will be G.D.

From 1989 to 1994 (with the exception of 1993), the Chiefs averaged about ten picks per draft. In 1989, when the Chiefs had 13 picks, they drafted the best defensive player in the draft. His name was Derrick Thomas out of Alabama. Last year the Chiefs drafted two defensive tackles, Turk McBride (2nd Round) and DeMarcus “Tank” Tyler (3rd Round), who have the potential to provide the Chiefs with a big and powerful interior D-Line. It was no secret that the previous interior, which consisted of Ron Edwards and Alphonso Boone, couldn’t get the job done. The 2008 draft also indicated that the Chiefs have learned from the past not to invest in just any defensive tackle like they did in 2004 by drafting Junior Siavii out of Oregon. He was a big, big disappointment.

Since 2005 the Chiefs have drafted for the future on the defensive side of the ball, and DT Glenn Dorsey and CB Brandon Flowers provide the finishing touches. In the past four years the Chiefs have acquired OLB Derrick Johnson, who was the Chiefs 2nd leading tackler with 83 tackles last season (Donnie Edward, OLB, was the leading tackler with 85 tackles). DE Tamba Hali, who had 7.5 sacks last season. SS Bernard Pollard, who was the Chiefs 4th leading tackler with 74 tackles, and he had two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a safety. FS Jarrad Page, who had three interceptions and a forced fumble. Not to mention that Page also had a couple of game winning interceptions against the Raiders. That’s a total of eight defensive starters that the Chiefs have drafted since 2005 (including 2008). The remaining three starters are experienced free agents, Donnie Edwards, DeMorrio Williams, and Napoleon Harris, that can help tutor the youngsters on how to make the transition to the NFL style of play. Those three veterans combine for a total of 245 tackles, four interceptions, and 3.5 sacks last season.

I would like to illustrate the importance of a solid D-Line. The defensive line is the first line of defense, which means that it all starts here! When stopping the run the defensive line dictates where the running back can run. Despite the blocking schemes, a good defensive line can disrupt any offense. They also have the ability to set up the other players on defense to make big plays. If you can’t run the ball, then you can’t set your opponent up for the pass. Which bring us to the pass defense? There’s an old saying about a good pass rush from the D-Line, “Pressure Busts Pipes.” That means if the D-Line can put enough pressure on the quarterback, then something bad will happen in favor of the defense, such as an interception, a sack, a fumble, etc. In other words, pressure applied results into turnovers or tackles for a loss of yardage. If you have a good defensive line then it puts the linebackers in a position to ‘roam’ every now and then. In addition to this, a good defensive line will create interceptions for the defensive backs. The cornerbacks don’t have to run around chasing wide receivers for more than five seconds. The defensive line is an integral part of all of the great defenses of the NFL. I see the potential in Tamba Hali, Tank Tyler, Turk McBride, and Glenn Dorsey (ALL UNDER 25 YRS.) of becoming one of the greatest defensive lines in NFL history.

Let’s not forget that the Chiefs also drafted a cornerback named Brandon Flowers, from Virginia Tech, and a defensive end named Brian Johnston out of Gardner-Webb. Flowers is a godsend to a team that is getting old at the corner position. By the way, he is an immediate starter! Oh how wonderful it will be to watch the pressure of Tamba Hali and Glenn Dorsey lead to an interception from Flowers or Patrick Surtain. And for those who think that Surtain is over the hill, I beg to differ. His work ethic is outstanding, and he is due to make $5,650,000 in 2008, so I expect big things from him. Probably the most exciting duo of the Chiefs defense right now is SS Bernard Pollard and FS Jarrad Page. This combination gives the Chiefs the potential to have one of the most exciting defensive backfields in football.

In conclusion, the Chiefs, since 2005, have made great strides to improve the defensive side of the ball with young and talented players. I never thought that I would say this, but the loss of Jared Allen has made us a better team. Furthermore, the Chiefs were able to obtain the aggressive spirit that was so much apart of Derrick Thomas. Jared Allen has it, and so does Glenn Dorsey. He will have other starters that will follow him to Hawaii at the end of each season. There is a new acronym in Kansas City, Missouri. It used to be D.T., and now it’s G.D.

P.S. My next article will cover a hand full of draft picks that will have an immediate impact on their new team. In addition to this article, I am working on another article about the Chiefs back-ups on defense! God Bless!

I live in Owings Mills, Maryland, approximately 10 minutes from the Headquarters of the Baltimore Ravens. I have been privileged to be able to see Ray Lewis in person, and in action on the football field. However, despite the fact that I live in Baltimore (Owings Mills is 15 miles outside of Baltimore City), I have been a Kansas City Chiefs fan since 1988. That’s 20 years of Chiefs knowledge and unforgettable experiences. Over that time I have also been honored to have witnessed the football spirit of Derrick Thomas. Even though D.T., as he is called by most Chiefs fans, and Ray Lewis have two totally different styles of how they play the game, both of them are trailblazers. Derrick played the game more like the great Lawrence Taylor, and Ray plays the game more like the intimidating Mike Singletary. But no matter what the differences are, they both have the exact same commanding spirit on the football field. They were both bred to support the philosophy that “Defense Wins Championships.”

Sometimes, I think that the passing of Derrick Thomas was a lot more tragic than most people believe. Not just to his family, God bless them, but also to his many fans across the world. Personally, I feel like I lost my big brother, and his passing still hurts to this very day. May peace and blessing be upon his children. To the Kansas City Chiefs fan, on the level of the game of football, his passing meant that we would experience the loss of a team leader, one who led by example, as well as the loss of a solid defense for ten straight years and counting. In addition to this, we loss a spirit that was geared toward the domination of an opponent. I repeat, defense wins championships.

Since 1997, which was the last time that Derrick Thomas went to the Pro Bowl, the Chiefs have only had three defensive players make it to the Pro Bowl. Those were, James Hasty in 1999, Jerome Woods in 2003, and Jared Allen in 2007. When D.T. was on the field he made those around him better, just like Ray. When he was in the starting lineup throughout a season, others would follow his lead and eventually follow him into the Pro Bowl. Those that followed him were Kevin Ross, Albert Lewis, Neil Smith, Dale Carter, Dan Saleaumua, and James Hasty, and there would have been many more. He played the position of outside linebacker so well, that Willie Lanier (1960’s) and Dino Hacket (1987) are the only other linebackers in Chiefs history to start in a Pro Bowl. No linebacker has had the honor of representing the Chiefs in a Pro Bowl since D.T. Also, D. T. was as special off of the field, as much as he was on the field thus winning the NFL Man of the Year Award in 1993. While the Kansas City Chiefs can’t get D.T. back, they can bring back his football spirit and philosophy. A philosophy that teaches us that a solid defense, with a solid leader is needed in order to win a championship.

For example, look at the 1993, 1995 and the 1997 seasons of the Kansas City Chiefs. One of those seasons was supposed to have produced a Super Bowl title. But it didn’t for one reason or another. For starters, one could argue that in 1993, when Joe Montana tried to bring a title back to Kansas City, he was too old and to banged up to lead us pass Buffalo. Or one could say that from 1991-1994 the Buffalo Bills simply owned the AFC. Moving forward to the 1995 AFC Playoffs, one could argue that the Chiefs threw too many interceptions and missed too many field goals to defeat the Indianapolis Colts. And lastly, one could argue that in the 1997 Playoff run that Elvis Grbac simply “choked,” or wasn’t completely healed from that broken clavicle suffered against Pittsburgh in week ten. However, my opinion is that Elvis Grbac shouldn’t have even been the starting quarterback in that Playoff game against Denver because Rich Gannon had clearly proven to all that had eyes that he could take over as the starting quarterback and march us on to victory. But nevertheless, despite those shortcomings, I hope that one thing was learned if nothing else, and that is that the foundation of a championship team begins on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs haven’t produced a Defensive Rookie of the Year since Dale Carter in 1992. We have not had an NFL Coach of the Year since 1997 when Marty Schottenheimer was our General. In 1995, the Chiefs led the NFL in scoring defense (15.1 ppg), and turnover ratio (+12). In 1997, the Chiefs top four picks (J. Woods, R. Tongue, J. Browning, & D. Edwards) all emerged as starters. In 2008, we need to repeat this
difficult, but very possible endeavor, if we ever plan to reclaim the AFC West title.

Currently, the Chiefs are putting the pieces of the puzzle together beginning with the Defensive Coordinator, whom I like to call “Gunny.” His real name is Gunther Cunningham. Gunny has given 11 years of service to the Kansas City Chiefs, eight of which as the team’s Defensive Coordinator, the only offensive or defensive coordinator in franchise annals to hold such a position for three different head coaches. With that being noted, the Kansas City Chiefs still can’t tackle. I don’t believe that this is Gunny’s fault. It’s the lack of a defensive leader, and the lack of a dominating spirit. But there is hope.
There are tandems, and combinations that are currently being built on the defensive side of the ball. For instance, Derrick Johnson and Jared Allen remind me of the early years of Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas. There are Jared Paige and Bernard Pollard, who show a resemblance of Jerome Woods and Reggie Tongue. We must continue to build
a defense around this current foundation with the 2008 NFL Draft.

However, this will not be an easy task because we still need an offensive line and a franchise quarterback. For now, Brodie Croyle will have to be that franchise quarterback, and our offensive line must learn to perform together on a Pro Bowl level like the Chiefs of ‘ole. Of course, this is easier said than done. The 2008 NFL Draft must deliver us a young leader on defense, and a future all-pro offensive tackle. In addition to this, we need someone to re-teach our defense how to tackle, and a leader that can lead by example. Someone who can
match, or exceed the intensity of Jared Allen, and someone who wants to change the spirit of the Kansas City Chiefs defense from a team that can’t tackle, to a team that can intimidate and dominate. We will never intimidate anyone as long as our defense has the tackling skills of Greg Wesley.

Sitting here at the house while it is cloudy and cold outside, I was reminiscing about the wonderful times I have had tailgating at Arrowhead. This got me thinking about stadiums in the various sports and the names of those places. I got to doing some research on the stadiums and the names and I was going to organize them into some type of system when I realized that there are actually only two categories– Cool and Bad. I was even going to extend this into college stadiums and further when I once again came to the conclusion that there are still only two categories–Cool and Bad.

Follow me here. To me, Cool exemplifies the team that plays there, the city or university represented and the sport itself. Bad is so self-evident that we all cringe at the very mention of the name. Usually, Bad is done for money or naming rights and has nothing whatsoever to do with the team or the sport itself. I’ll try to give some examples of each.

Cool Names

Giants Stadium
Pretty obvious who plays there. They even allow that other team, the Jets, to play. Nothing fancy, just very straight forward and to the point. So good that you don’t even have to tell a sports fan where it is or what sport is played there.

Lambeau Field
Well, that pretty much sums up that one. Everybody and their brother knows this one.

LA Coliseum
Even though I can’t stand USC I have to admit that the stadium name is nothing fancy or froo-froo even for Los Angeles.

Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge
I hate LSU as much as I hate the Raiders and Broncos but their stadium has a very good name. Says it all and even says who plays there.

Death Valley, Clemson
Now, THAT is a cool name.

Wrigley Field
When the name itself is an icon then it must be good.

The Pit, New Mexico Basketball
One of the best names in basketball or any sport.

Now here are some of the Bad. First of all, Bad includes any stadium name after a corporation or egotistical person who wanted their name on a stadium just because they gave a lot of money to a school or paid for naming rights. Naming rights - I despise the term itself.

Bad Names

Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium
As a life-long Razorback fan I gag just trying to say this monstrosity. It once was just Razorback Stadium, the Coolest name, until this guy thought he should have his name on it because he gave some money. Hey, if you’re a fan your ego shouldn’t take precedence.

Lincoln Financial Field
Do the Eagles play there or a bunch of Wall Street folks?

Raymond James Stadium and Bank of America Stadium
See above.

University of Phoenix Stadium
And a COLLEGE doesn’t even play there!

M&T Bank Stadium
Doesn’t this name instilll fear in opponents?

I could go on and on about Bad names, but there are so many that I could never list them all. Time and space just won’t allow it. Suffice to say that any stadium named after a corporation, a bank, a person who did nothing but give money, etc. deserves to be boycotted and the people who decided on the name should be paraded in the parking lots before games and subjected to all the abuse they deserve.

Of course, to me, the Coolest name in all of sports is Arrowhead Stadium.

Represents everything about the team and the fans. Even the design goes with the name. Looking at the beautiful lines and flow of the stadium one just can’t help but be impressed. Help us all if the day comes when we play in places named Qualcomm and such.
